Comments/Problems:

Had two issues during install...
1. Did not detect wireless network card. Intel Wireless WiFi Link
4965AGN (802.11a/g/n) (Maybe too new for Linux support yet? Will know
more once I try to make it work...)

2. uswsusp could not find the swap partition. (This is my first laptop
install... maybe no big deal.)

Other then the issues described above, it was your typical uneventful
Debian install... It ejected the CD, rebooted right into X, and off I
went.

You're very probably right.....or it needs a firmware to be loaded,
which is something not supported yet in the installer.

Hmmm, strange, but should really be dealt with the uswsusp package
maintainer.

Reassigning that bug report to this package, in the hope that this
will be trackable and reproducible.

Well it should have. Can you send

cat /proc/swaps
and
cat /etc/uswsusp.conf
and
cat /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume

This is supposed to be fixed in etch.

You need to keep the bug-report in the cc.

From the config files it seems the installation went OK. But what I
don't understand is this:

> Cheetah:~# cat /proc/swaps
> Filename Type Size Used Priority
> /dev/sda5

Did you accidentally removed the output (there is not type, size, etc)?

Do you get any error messages if you type s2disk on the commandline?

Tim,
Must not have copied the whole line.

Cheetah:~# cat /proc/swaps
Filename Type Size Used
Priority

/dev/sda5 partition 2650684 0 -1

I Got this when I ran '# s2disk' as root:
s2disk: pm_ops->prepare failed, using 'shutdown mode = shutdown' . Reason:
Inappropriate ioctl for device
s2disk: Snapshotting system

System went sort of dead. Had that error at the top of the screen with a
flashing cursor. However I was not able to get it back. Used another
computer to search the net, didn't find anything that looked like what I
had. Pressed the power button, and the machine turned off. Pressed the
power button again, and it came back up.

Checked to see if there were any errors printed to log:

Cheetah:~# cat /var/log/messages | grep s2disk
found nothing...

Digging through the log, I found the beginning of the next boot mesages.
The last thing in /var/log/messages before that boot was the following:

May 21 19:53:38 localhost -- MARK --
May 21 20:04:50 localhost kernel: Freezing cpus ...
May 21 20:04:50 localhost kernel: CPU 1 is now offline
May 21 20:04:50 localhost kernel: SMP alternatives: switching to UP code

OK, than it seems that the configuration of uswsusp was successful. But
apparently it doesn't work...

OK, that error message is harmless I think.

So after `snapshotting system' nothing happened, no messages?

So it was basically a hard reboot, it did not resume, right?

Anything out of the ordinary about your system? It is a dual core
processor, right?

Well. I think this should just work, but before we try to debug this
further, could you try with a more recent kernel. Etch' kernel is
2.6.18, but we also have 2.6.21 in the archive.

Tim,

After installing Debian's 2.6.21 kernel both suspend and hibernate work.

In response to your questions:

> So after `snapshotting system' nothing happened, no messages?

Before - When I would snapshot the system, all I would see was a blinking
cursor.
After - I see the progress of s2disk "snapshotting system".

> So it was basically a hard reboot, it did not resume, right?

Before - The system would not resume. It was a hard reboot.
After - When I turn the machine back on, it restores right to where I left
off.

> Anything out of the ordinary about your system? It is a dual core
> processor, right?

There's really nothing too out of the ordinary about my system other then
it is a newer model Toshiba Laptop. It is a dual core processor.

After getting this to work with Debian's 2.6.21 kernel, I tried compiling
several other higher versions, copying Debian's .config, all without
success. I was able to get the machine to hibernate, but when the machine
was booted back up, it was a clean boot, and did not restore my previous
session. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated, as I would like to

Thanks for your help!

Matt
