Package: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
Version: 1.2.1-1
Severity: normal

Hi, The multitouch emulation on m Acer Aspire 1810TZ suddenly stopped working.
It was working fine using a local udev rules file, containing:
ENV{x11_driver}="synaptics" ENV{x11_options.VertEdgeScroll}="true"
ENV{x11_options.HorizEdgeScroll}="true"
ENV{x11_options.EmulateTwoFingerMinW}="7"
ENV{x11_options.EmulateTwoFingerMinZ}="20"
ENV{x11_options.VertTwoFingerScroll}="true"
ENV{x11_options.HorizTwoFingerScroll}="true" I have seen that xorg is not
switching back to using xorg.conf syntax in xorg.conf.d, which I have tried
using the same options, without success; Section "InputClass" Driver
"synaptics" Identifier "touchpad" Option "VertEdgeScroll"
"true" Option "HorizEdgeScroll" "true" Option
"EmulateTwoFingerMinW" "7" Option "EmulateTwoFingerMinZ" "20"
Option "VertTwoFingerScroll" "true" Option
"HorizTwoFingerScroll" "true" EndSection I have even tried building the
current git head of your repository, but it leads to a non working keyboard...
Not sure what information are needed to try and understand this issue, hence,
please, do not hesitate to ask me. Cheers, Julien

So you had two finger scrolling working and it suddenly stopped stopped?
No driver upgrade recently?
Can you see what this command returns?
$ grep synaptics /var/log/dpkg.log{,.1}

I never played too much with two finger emulation, not really sure what
might be going on here.
Can you include the output of
$ synclient -l

Thanks

Yes, it was working fine until Monday.

Last upgrade (apart from my tests yesterday to upgrade to 1.2.2-2 from
git) is dated of March the 28th.

You'll find it attached.
You'll notice that the values seem correct, except EmulateTwoFingerMinZ
which is always set at 280 while I want it to be 20.

After checking carefully the aptitude log, I have found that
xserver-xorg-{core,common} were updated yesterday morning.

This part of the changelog might be of interest:
* 15-keep-udev-x11-driver.diff: keep looking for the x11_driver udev
property as a transitional measure. This should allow the new server to
work while drivers aren't transitioned to xorg.conf.d yet.

After downgrading these packages to the previous version (2:1.7.6-1),
things work fine again.

I hence reassign this bug to xserver-xorg-core (feel free to change it
if that's not right).

To xserver-xorg-core maintainers: my local udev rules file which lets me
set the correct options to the synaptics driver doesn't seem to be taken
into account in the last version available in sid, despite the
15-keep-udev-x11-driver.diff patch.

Cheers,
Julien

That's great news! Thanks

But this needs to go into NEWS.Debian. In fact I looked there to see if
any such changes were to be expected in this version, since I knew
you've mentioned this before as the long-term development direction.

Anyway, how about a transitional warning message if you detect any
x11_options environment variable? I can produce a patch if you want.
It should be trivial.

Thank Timo, he's done all the work of backporting this to our X server
and drivers :)

> But this needs to go into NEWS.Debian.

The udev x11_options stuff has never been documented, it's never been
included in a stable release, so I disagree with that. However, an
update of synaptics' README.Debian with explanations/pointers for the
new configuration stuff is probably needed. Patches gratefully
accepted.

Cheers,
Julien

Thanks a lot Julien, it now works - I missed the MatchIsTouchpad option
in my first tests.
