This has happened to me a couple of times today whilst
trying to put together a data DVD.

Does it happen specifically when you deal with video files?
Otherwise, if you find a way to reproduce this, that would be helpful.
BTW, could you try with GTK+ 2.18.6 now in unstable? This bug could also
lie in lower layers.
