We the People is a cool looking US Civil war game with a huuuuuuuuge map by
GMT.

Have written off The Exalted game as just being bad and disservice to the
excellent source material. While I wouldn't mind playing it there are just
so many games that would come higher in my "To play" list. Would rather
play Wellington, Stronghold and Sekiwhatever. Also the Spanish Civil war if
I ever figure out the rules.

Will look up WW

Any news yet on a GMT event. Have been working on writing quick guides for
1 or 2 games before tackling virgin queen, in order to make a half decent
job of it.

Hoping to make tomorrow night too having had a cold last week.

see that colonial is on kick starter and may succeed this time.

And yes, VQ is the most complicated looking game I have ever seen, cheat

Will write some for the GMT games you lent me to speed up learning process.

Oh Steve, did you see democracy is on kick starter too. Seems a bit like
there's too much requirement to debate in the game from looking at the
video.
What do you think ?

Subject: Boardgaming weekend
Had one of my weekend's away with my mates playing boardgames from Thursday to Saturday. It's the first time I've had a chance to go for 3 years so it was good to catch up with my old friends. This is what I played, though I might have missed some!

Thursday:
Netrunner x 2 - I always loved this as a CCG and it now bring a living card game just makes it easier to get into

Labyrinth - A 2 player card based game (ala Twilight Struggle) but about the US war on terrorism. I played the Terrorists and had a terrible first turn, ending up with only 3 cells on the board (you start with 5 and are supposed to expand). I was always behind after that and even after starting a large terrorist camp in Algeria I couldn't recover and lost it. Despite that I enjoyed it and look forward to playing again. It's asymmetrical and once you get a handle on the different actions available plays very quickly

Eclipse - This has received rave reviews and so I'd looked forward to having a go at it. I really liked it, it's got good clean systems and excellent replay ability, I'll probably end up getting myself a copy

Friday
Core Worlds - This borrows elements from Dominion and Ascension (and/or Puerto Rico) but plays very smoothly and is good fun. Probably too close to the games its based on to bother getting if you already have one or more of those.

Glory to Rome - The amateurish box art has always put me off this but it is very good, if a bit confusing to start with. I may still have a copy in the shop, if I do I'm going to steal it!

innovation - An interesting game, but the best play each turn seemed obvious and I won by a mile despite never having seen it before. I'm in two minds about this one. It's by the same guy as Glory to Rome but I wouldn't rate it as highly

Agricola - Despite being the 2nd highest rated game on BGG - and owning it - I'd never got round to playing this one so was pleased that the guys would show me how to play. We played the family game and, though it was ok, I wouldn't put it in my top 10. It seemed just as the game was getting going it stopped. However I'd certainly like to give it a few more goes

Ave Caesar x 4 - This (the 1989 edition) is my most played game of all time. I still have more laughs playing this than any other game. It's always amusing to play it with a new person and see just how bad they can do, despite the game initially looking like it's very basic with little thought required. Highly recommend playing 6 players on the 3-4 player side of the board for maximum screwage

Euphrates and Tigris card game - We started playing this very late after not having read the rules. Big mistake as there is more to it than first appears. I'll probably read the rules and give it another chance

Saturday
Red Winter x 3 - The GMT tactical game of a battle between the Soviets and Finn in 1939. Just excellent, 3 played the first day scenarios twice, then jumped into the first two days scenario to get more into it. The system is just excellent, simple but giving just enough tactical feel and with a board that allows a variety of choices of approach and defence points. Very highly recommended! My opponent and I are continuing by starting a Campaign game via Vassal

Age of Empires 3 - One of my favourite games, this is somewhat unknown I feel. Always tight and every decision is vital to get right. Despite warning the new player that was was a bad idea he insisted on attacking me which led to use coming last. Hopefully next time he'll learn. Still very, very good.

Power Grid - Can you believe I'd never played this before? Just fantastic, the whole system hangs together so well, self balances to stop someone running away with it and is simple but yet great decision points. Another game I'll be having for myself

Core Worlds again - Another win for me but closer this time :-)

Ave Caesar x 4 again - Yet more hilarity!

Sunday
Finished off Red Winter, successfully holding off the Soviet hordes.

Other games played over the weekend by others included Proud Monster Deluxe, Virgin Queen, Hannibal, For the People, Washington's War, and more that I've forgotten.
