A few of us are proposing to meet at the www.AbsoluteHotel.com next
Monday evening at 7.30pm for a chat about the future of Limerick
Hackerspace. It'd be nice to do some introductions, learn about each
other's backgrounds and areas of interest. Then perhaps we can broach
the subject of a location for the hackerspace.

I'm in. Probably get lost on the way though, heh. Any idea if the 308
goes near there?

Some 308 goes, some doesn't, it depends.
Ask driver if the bus goes through childers road, and don't use such a bus.
But I think the hotel is not far away from the centre, in the worst case :-)

True enough. If I get off work reasonably early I could walk back out.
Tch, 308s though. I know one of 'em's A and one of 'em is just plain
308, but it can be a gamble which one you'll actually get.

I should be able to make it. Interested in lots of stuff, but mostly
Arduino and GM862, and also I have a long-term plan to restore an
ancient ASR-33, which should make a good project to do in a
hackerspace.

I have many interests, but I'm just a student really. I'll probably be
programming or similar, it'd be nice to have somewhere to do that
without (too many) interruptions.

I won't be able to attend (my 5-a-side night!). Would someone mind
keeping a few notes and posting them to this list if anything
interesting comes up?

Will try to make it, but I have a guest coming that night.
A hackerspace in Limerick would be great, has anyone tried to contact
the city council?

Some of the current master students in Interactive Media might be
interested in joining, I will spread the word.
And there was some interest from members of the Interaction Design
Association in the topic, do you want me to publicize the event on
that list as well?

Hi James,
I love the concept and would to be part of this group. I can't make
Monday evening but I'll try to get to the next meet up.

I'm interested in home automation, networking, media centre, internet
apps, etc.

I have a skillsaw, an arc welder, a soldering iron, a 42U rack and
some duck tape ready to cobble together in to something :)

That's great John but I read on 091labs.com that one of the most
consistently popular workshops there in Galway is Ubuntu so you'll
have to drop all that cool hardware now and again to do the Linux guru
thing too ;-)

Yes, please do spread the word to your students Gabriela and the IxDA
group - we'd love to have them on-board. And yes, I have been in touch
with Maria Croke of the city council in relation to the "Creative
Limerick" project. She suggested contacting the creatives in Faber
Studios on Thomas Street, in All Out Design Studio on Sarsfield
Street and the Benneton Building on the corner of Sarsfield Street/
Henry Street. So if anyone is passing by those locations or already
knows people involved please do share the message.

Gabriela, I see you're already 'friended' with the Spirit Store group
on Facebook. Do you know Marilyn Lennon or others there? It would be
great to make them aware of what's happening here.

Cool. I've been at a few DAWN exhibitions, and that's exactly the kind
of stuff I'd be interested helping to build in the hackerspace!

Isn't there an Open Source group in Limerick anyway? I'm a member but
I haven't been to any meetings.
http://www.meetup.com/limerick-open-source/

Just pointing that out; maybe there's room for some cross-pollination
there too. (Although the group is somewhat inactive.)

Ah, thanks for reminding me James. I went along to some of their
meetings last year and have Tim Bunce's email so I'll contact him to
let him know. Tim came along to OpenCoffee a few times too so yes,
cross pollination between all these groups is great IMHO.

There is an ubuntu hour now meeting in Limerick every month.
So you might want to put a email out to the ubuntu-ie mailing list
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-ie
Dont worry about posting to it, I post all our TOG events there.

Y'know that interactive media course that UL run? Well DAWN is the
exhibition of the projects that students did that year. It's usually
held around sept, and is full of cool artsy/techy projects.

I don't have a link for it (I've an old broken one), and can't seem to
find a link on the UL site. Maybe Gabriela can dig out a link for
us...

Luigina Ciolfi has informed me on the Facebook account that Limerick
Pride is launching tomorrow (Monday) night at 8pm in the
AbsoluteHotel.com and it will most likely therefore be packed
(unfortunate coincidence in timing). But I guess it's too late to
change now so can we perhaps arrange to meet at first in the
downstairs foyer (I'm guessing most of those people will head upstairs
to the bar).

Noted. See ye in the downstairs foyer so. Perhaps we should keep in
touch some other way now that we're closer to the time? I can be
reached on Twitter @PROGRAM_IX. I'm relying heavily on the 7:15 bus
going by the Absolute, so it'd be nice to make my apologies
straightaway if it doesn't.

Probably not too late -- how about GBK (formerly the George Hotel) in
the city centre? Easier for those arriving by bus, too.

I dunno John, I've hastily re-arranged an event at the last minute
like that previously and it was a disaster. If we were to change venue
at this late stage not everyone on Facebook, Twitter, Plancast, etc,
would pick up on it. So let's just leave it at the AbsoluteHotel.com
for tonight with my apologies in advance for any inconvenience caused
(by bus stops and crowds). I'll take the heat and let someone else
arrange the next meet-up :-)

James Heslin

Yeah, even though the venue is a bit inconvenient, it's definitely
less inconvenient than trying to get everyone together somewhere else.
If we could notify everybody in time, that'd be great for me since I'm
staying in the city at the moment, but for now I'm grand with the
Absolute.

## Meeting in RIVERBANK BAR at AbsoluteHotel.com ## - Sorry for all
the chopping and changing on this folks but I've been on to the
Absolute Hotel and they tell me the Limerick Pride thing will be going
on in the foyer. So they have reserved space for us in the Riverbank
Bar instead. I've asked them to put a notice to that effect in the
foyer too. See you all there.

I am mostly interested in going along to learn and attend workshops
about most things.
Would also be interested in looking into wearable electronics.

Thanks all for coming along tonight - I counted 15? I'll post a few
topics under the headings of the main action points that came out of
tonight (and please add any I missed -- my hearing isn't the best and
the background noise was a bit much at times).

Great to have you all on board.

Yes, I've had an email conversation with Maria Croke of the Creative
Limerick initiative - http://url.ie/78hu - She has suggested making
contact with their creatives in Faber Studios on Thomas Street, in
Sarsfield Street in All Out Design Studio and the Benneton Building on
the corner of Sarsfield Street/Henry Street. Anyone passing by those
locations in the city can you drop in and spread the word?

That's great, please do.

Absolutely :-)

By the way, I completely missed out on The Spirit Store project going
on in the city - http://url.ie/78i0 - does anyone know if it's still
ongoing or have any contact with Marilyn or others in the group. It
seems like there would be a lot to learn from them and much overlap.
I'm reading their blog here - http://spiritstorelimerick.blogspot.com/
- and will try to make contact myself. They speak of "artist-led or
public-led events and DIY culture" so it seems like a match!

-James.

Yes, I've been emailing Maria Croke of the 'Creative Limerick'
initiative - http://url.ie/78hu - who has advised me to visit their
creatives in Faber Studios on Thomas Street, All Out Design Studio in
Sarsfield Street and another at the Benneton Building on the corner of
Sarsfield Street/Henry Street. As I'm living in Newcastlewest myself
can someone else in the group take it on themselves to drop into one
or two of these locations if they're nearby? Otherwise I'll try to get
there some day I'm in town.

> Some of the current master students in Interactive Media might be interested in joining, I will spread the word.

That's great, please do keep spreading the world. Already there's been
an upsurge in activity here (new momentum as I said) so let's keep it
going.
