Please be warned that the professional conman who has robbed so many people in Blantyre and Lilongwe is now reported to be operating in Mzuzu.
He usually targets expat women but we’ve also heard stories from expat men, Malawian men and women and the occasional Asian. He hangs around shopping areas (particularly where there are ATMs) and usually approaches people just as they're about to start their car. His story varies but he always claims that you know him well from Immigration, the Police or other authority and seems offended if you don't immediately "recognise" him. If you say you don’t know him, he usually says it’s because you don’t recognise him because he’s out of uniform. He calls himself Mr Mwanza, Phiri, Banda or another familiar sounding name.
He's shorter than average, in his late 40s/early 50s, with a paunch, almost bald with a little greying hair, jovial face, well dressed, speaks perfect English. He generally asks where you're driving to and then - coincidentally - claims that's exactly where he's heading. He then jangles a bunch of keys and claims he can't use his car as it's stranded with no fuel. If you get suckered into giving him a lift, he chats merrily about the situation in Malawi and gestures a lot with one hand while, in the meantime, his other hand will be fishing around for something to steal. He's made a fortune from his victims in Lilongwe in the last few months.
This man is known to the police and they are very anxious to catch him so, if he approaches you, please report it immediately to your local police station and advise them that he is wanted by the police in Lilongwe.
If you can get a photo of him, you’ll be a hero for life!!!
