Grahamstown, although a great venue, provides logistical challenges.
The invisible hand is pointing to a different location.
I'd like to come, but it is far and a lot of money for a weekend away. I need to find out if my contract will be extended at the end of October, which will determine if I can afford it... so I can tell you at the end of October if I will be coming. The biggest issue is the cost of flights... and the need for a rental car - together I can't find anything under R2800.

I can't work and drive at the same time, so at a billable rate of let's say R500/hour, driving down on a Thursday will in fact cost me R6000 in lost revenue if it takes 12 hours.
Trevor has taken the initiave, devoted time and energy to organising a conference for all our benefit.
It return for each suggestion to solve the problems offered, he receives counter arguments.
All goes to show that no good deed goes unpunished.
So if you travel by air you make a handsome profit because you can work while flying and waiting.
If you were indeed fortunate to be able to earn R500 for every waking hour, you might feel more able to afford the air fare and car hire charge in any event.
I wasn't criticising. Trevor asked why he got little or no responses and a few people suggested that cost might be an issue. Personally, I think costs could be an issue, but don't know yet because for me it depends entirely on information I will only have at the end of October.
Also, the cost is not Trevor's fault - costs were also an issue last year, since getting to Wellington is not much cheaper than getting to Grahamstown from here... and yet we had 50 people there and the greatest time.
Trevor asked for reasons and a people said "costs". That should not be taken personally and is not a universally applicable answer.
In actual fact, it does not really matter to me personally what alternative cost saving suggestions Trevor makes - if my contract is not renewed at the end of October, then I can't afford to come to LibSem even if it was being held in my own kitchen.
So Trevor's cost reduction suggestions might not work for me personally or solve my problems, but they may be valuable to others and so I'm glad he is making them. Thanks Trevor.

Exactly. When you give stuff to others which is of value to them, that earns you the ability to enjoy the things they (or others) have to offer in return. Isn't that the way the world is supposed to work ? Rather giving something of lesser value to someone else is not the way to increase future enjoyment, right ?
