PS:  My take is less optimistic about science being relevant; some people love sky-is-falling alarmism, and some (a minority including me) are skeptical.

Reminds me of this piece that I read recently:

The enviro-nuts must be getting really desperate. A bureaucrats from the Philippines actually is claiming that global warming is causing more prostitution, which is increasing the spread of HIV.

Well, they're right ... sort of ... there is a clear link between warming and prostitution.  It's just reverse causality.
