Tracking down a prankster

Hi,
We had a chat prankster this afternoon and when I went into the admin
side (under monitor activity) to see if s/he was coming from on
campus, I saw that both the user's IP and referring URL were listed as
"false". So, I'm curious...can a user block or hide their IP range
and referring URL when they chat with us? How'd they do that?

Not an emergency or anything, we were just wondering.
