I'm looking for two kinds of console set ups – one for traveling event use, and the other to be installed in library facilities. For both kinds of set-ups I'd like self contained units that can be moved around with minimal juggling of cables and whatnot.

The setup for more or less permanent library installation needs to be moveable, but the focus is more on security. (Using a hand truck is an acceptable option.)  Ideally I'd like stand up style arcade cabinets with space for controllers, which can be closed when it is not appropriate time for kids to be playing games – school hours. These units are going to be placed in areas that will regularly be re-tasked to allow senior scholars or other area groups to make use of the space. (Essential for public relations.)

The travelling rigs will move between all four of the Georgetown County libraries, and it would be great if they made it easy to move the gaming setups from storage to event space via the van with a minimum of hassle. Travelling game rigs would be fine as shorter units for seated play. Mobility, and protecting the gear, is more important than security because these rigs will always be used at closely moderated events.

Are there any suggestions for this kind of setup?

Cheers!

We have one TV in a cabinet with the necessary cables and power supply left attached when we're done. We just unplug the Wii and put the game, controllers, and console in a locking mobile industrial cabinet. To that cabinet we have another, smaller TV mounted to the top and just pull out the Xbox and plug it up. The cabinet is locked when not in use, and then locked inside an office inside the locked library when we're closed. If someone wants it after all that, then they're welcome to it.

We have 2 wii's, 2 gamecubes, and a PS2 with DDR pads.

The gamecubes and the 2 smallish (17" I think) flatscreen TVs travel quite well. We have clear plastic boxes for the cubes and cables and games, and I made covers for the TVs from an old flannel sheet! They and their covers just fit a standard library book tub (unlidded). These can go in the van in 5 minutes flat.

One Wii came with a travel bag that fits the wii, cables, 2 controllers and a game fairly comfortably. If a TV is at the destination, this travels beautifully. Otherwise, hauling one of the small TVs would work. Unfortunately, this would mean the 2 cubes and the wii wouldn't be available at the same time. This gets locked in the media cart closet when not in use.

Our PS2 is generally used with a projector and screen. We have a "kinda portable" screen, but truly, most places have a wall that can substitute. The projector has its own carry case, and the PS2 goes in another plastic box with all its cables and games and the hand controller. The pads I just carry by hand. We have the mid-range pads that weigh about 25-30 lbs and are not that hard to carry around short distances. In-library, this all goes on an open media cart that is secured in a closet between uses. (The same cart, sans PS2 box also has our DVD player and is used regularly for movies and other programs).

Our second Wii is kept in a lockable media cart with a LARGE flat-screen TV on top. This stays locked up (in the Director's Office) when not in use. We also keep the two small TV's inside this cart when not traveling.

Hope this helps give you some ideas!

Our library has a Wii that I travel to branches with. I got the G-pak
travel case for it and absolutely love it! You can use the Wii right
in the case and never have to take it out. It has places to store
Wiimotes and nunchuks, sensor bar, cables and plenty of games. It
also has an outside pocket for instruction books or batteries. We
also have 4 gamecube controllers for Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Unfortunately they don't fit in the case, so I have a separate bag for
them. I also have to carry 2 dance mats for dance dance revolution
and 2 guitars for Guitar Hero and I take a projector with me to
project the game on the wall, so it still ends up being a lot to
carry. The Wii itself, however, is very easy to transport in the
case. If you do keep the games in the case, which I do, you want to
keep an eye on them because you have to keep the case open when the
Wii is in use (so it will not overheat) and the games are fairly
exposed. (They are stored out of their cases in slots for CD's.) I
was initially a bit concerned about this as it would be very easy for
someone to just slip a game out and take it, but I haven't had any
problems. The teens seem to be so excited to have this opportunity to
get together and play. I think they really appreciate it and usually
act very well. There is also a more hidden space in the case that
holds some games, so if you don't need to take many, they could
probably all fit in there.

Hi Donald--

I attended the Video X Po in Philadelphia last week. One company
already has a trailer set-up with seats along the side of the trailer
and the game screens along the other side. The trailer can be rented
for parties, etc. I thought that it was a neat idea. I think that I
would like to see a bookmobile manufacturer develop a combo gaming and
bookmobile that could be used around a city or county. A great idea
for an LSTA grant!
