Hi Guys,

At the last meetup, Sam and I discussed Chapter 1 of Probability Theory. Our discussion was mostly over when Robert arrived.

Results

Mostly we found the material simple and straightforward. It didn't stimulate much discussion.
Sam helped me understand the meaning of "A implies B," which was the least intuitive concept in the chapter.
Sam particularly enjoyed the mentions of Quantum Physics and suchlike falling under the realm of this theory.

Problems

Our discussion was not guided. We did not have any end goals in mind nor a basic framework for the discussion.
We did not keep notes of our discussion (this email is constructed from memory).
We briefly debated elements from the text because of imperfect recall of the text. We should have a copy of the book handy to avoid wasting time on questions that can be answered by lookups.

Conclusions

Chapter 1 indicates the promise of the book. I would like to continue reading it, and am prepared to spend money (Malo's Proposal) to do so. Our group discussion of the book will not be worthwhile unless we address the problems set out above.

Read Chapter 2 for Monday, April 23

Regards,

Stefan

We can solve problem 3 by designating someone for each meeting to bring their laptop with the pdf on it. I'm game to do this, although it's non-optimal since my laptop is large, heavy, and has very little battery life. Similarly, we can have a designate note-taker. Not sure about the first problem.

(I'm also not going to be in town for two weeks)

I'll have my iPad next week with the .pdf on it.
