Hey guys, I feel like it has been for ever sense I posted anything. We had a f4 tornado come through our little town (Mena AR), I have been to busy to update you all on my rack & pinion.
So in a nut shell, it ROCKS!!!!!! No pun intended the thing moves so fast I had to mount it to my back wall just to keep it from walking out the door!!! I am not complaining, though legacy calls it an upgrade, it really is what the the cnc version should have been all along!, if it seems like I am using exclamation points a bit much that should tell you something!!!!. Anyway, this thing has NO y carriage backlash, runs as smooth as a greased pig though a hungry village, holds .0003, and I have run a file with 75,000 lines of g-code and three bit changes without missing one step!!!!
I ve done some cool (helpful) stuff to my legacy that I will post pics of soon.
Hello Greg
I am very happy to hear that you feel that the rack&pinion up grade was a good investment,
I honestly cant wait to see your pix.s of your machine and some of your new projects.
Keep up the good work. And please keep in touch.

Bill if you want to buy another lead screw, http://www.dependableacme.com/index.htm sells what you are looking for, (and if I do say so,MY SELF) there prices are pretty reasonable. I have no idea on the shipping charges it would take to get the lead screw to Australia? but at least this is a good place to start looking, if Greg cant/wont sell you his.

Thank you I will tuck that address away and I will email if another one doesn't come up, but with every body turning to cnc and rack and pinion surly there must be a few unused lead screws out there the nuts to go with it too that I can pic up at a good price.
hopefully some one will read this and contact me. and if some one could please post a pic as I asked before of the vertical vice especially the side plates I would be grateful. even the rack and pinion itself I have not seen a pic of that either. way down under here we don't have the luxury of legacy demonstrations like you guys do to see all this stuff first hand.

I made a vertical vise setup several weeks ago using 80/20 aluminum extrusion and ShopFox cam clamps. I also recently figured out in my head that they could be used as a vertical vice setup too. Since my machine is on a bench I really can't test out the idea so the option is kind of pointless in my case!
Basically my horizontal vises could be converted to vertical vises by drilling another set of mounting holes 90 degrees to the original mounting holes. This would allow me to turn the vise rails 90 degrees so the clamps are now in the vertical mounting position. One rail would be mounted on top of the bed rails, and the other would be mounted on the bottom of the bed rail. That would give me about 1.65" of spacing between the clamps, but it should be enough spacing to hold the wood firmly.
On second thought, since the 80/20 is the same on all sides, I could also just move the clamps and blocks 90 degrees to the side faces and I would be ready to go. No new holes to be drilled in my vise setup.
