Subject: Scrap Metal and Plastic in Leeds

Does anyone know of places in Leeds where I can buy scrap metal or plastic?

There seems to be plenty of scrap metal dealers but I'm not sure whether
someone can just walk in off the street and buy from them.  I can't find
any scrap plastic dealers at all.

Perhaps there are some hardware stores that sell acrylic off cuts for
example?

At work we throw away both metal and plastic away. How much are you wanting
and what for?

Morgan.

What are you after? I get a lot of scrap metal ( panels from pc cases,
aluminium, etc) if not someone at work is bound to know.  Also not the
right place for this but who was it that wanted floppy drives and do they
still want them? I got 4 sat here now, gave up collecting more when I
realised I couldn't remember who I was asbo.g them for.

Surely that's a very easy question to answer...
My guess is it will depend on the merchant.

I'd be surprised if there's a substantial domestic scale plastic recycling
market.

Metals are relatively valuable, compact and easy to process.  In most cases
simpy metling them down and selling ingots is a profitable exercise.

Most plastics have very low raw material value and are hard to reprocess.
Transport, storage and and recycling often cost more than the end product is
worth.  I expect most plastic recycling is either indirectly subsidised (e.g.
piggy-backed on council waste collections, or landfill charges), or large
scale industrial waste.

James,
Yes, it was scrap stuff I was talking about. Well worth checking the website for opening times - and giving them a call to make sure they're in before you go!

They tend to have small pieces of acrylic sheet, then various plastic tubs, boxes, tubes, etc. They did have some ~200mm diameter acrylic tube in ~200mm lengths too, but not loads.

they don't have much metal. It's definitely more 'art-y' junk stuff than industrial.. but worth a browse, especially if you're leeds based or near and after some crafty bits.

You are supposed to have a membership card (£6 / year last time I got one) but you can get around it if you're only after a few bits and bobs.

lovely people.

what metal are you after? I too have plenty of PC case / photocopier frame type sheet. Worth web-searching for local metal stockists - not just scrap places - and ringing them / visiting. Sometimes you might be able to get off-cuts from there, or long lengths of bar / tube / etc are not necessarily super expensive.

What do you need in metal.? I have been using metal supermarket in
Leeds, it is over near Ikea. Just walk in off the street and buy as
little as you need.

There is also some scrap aluminium and steel at the space left over from
stuff I did.
