As you've probably gathered if you've been following the mailing list, we're getting to the point of being able to sign for the new space. However, before anything is signed we need to have a good idea of the membership numbers we're likely to get. This is to ensure the new space will be sustainable.
CURRENT Members: Could all current paying members get in contact to confirm they'll be continuing their support. Could you also get in contact with anyone you think is a possible member and direct them to this mailing list, or IRC.
POSSIBLE Members: Could you please get in touch, letting us know how likely it is that you'll join, when you'd be in a position to start paying your membership, the stage at which you'd be happy to start paying (i.e. straight away, when the lease is signed, when the space is ready to use), how much you'd be able to pay (£25 is the suggested monthly membership, but more is welcome).

I have a person or two on a maybe list, they'd be interested in coming down and having a gander but both are probably unlikely to go into paying £25 a month for it without some kind of structure for definite and something to show for the cost.
Obviously it wouldn't be as simple as lowering that at this time but from what I've heard it is a bit unaffordable for a number of people and more expensive than other hackspaces.

I think I'm already confirmed in the google doc, but I'll confirm here
as well: I'm ready to sign up for £25/mo. when the new space is
available - if it is in/close to the Mabgate location we've
identified. I don't need it to be fully built out, but will need
evening and weekend access, power, table and chair. I'm also happy to
drop some money in the pot if I bring a guest.

As I have been attending most Hackspace meetups, its probably time I
subscribed :-). Although I am always ready to lend a hand with
practical stuff like painting the new space etc. Am quite happy to
start paying the 25/mo immediately and if funds allow at some point,
put some in the pot as well.
On a related note, I think a lower rate for students and unwaged would
certainly help us to swell our numbers. Giving up time to come and
help get the new space up and running is always useful as well.

We suggest £25/month and are happy to accept more.
We don't have an official Student / Unwaged suggestion as we don't know what you can pay, especially as we're trying to get people to confirm to a regular monthly amount rather than just making a donation as/when (the donations are fantastic, but it makes it impossible to estimate how we pay our bills each week).
We're in a silly situation where we need to grow both our monthly income and the size of our community, but I really don't want to see the community suffer because of the drive for funds.
Anyone who's wanting to get involved but can't manage the suggested amount is asked to offer what they feel they can afford to pay. Feel free to contact Mick or I privately about it if you prefer.

The amount suggested has been phrased in a similar way to this several times: "£25 is the suggested monthly membership, but more is welcome". The way it has been phrased has sounded to me like LHS is unhappy to accept less. I suppose it's meant to be a little cheeky? I think it might be clearer if you said something like. "Monthly membership is pay-what-you-can (suggested donation £25 per month). Of course, if you wanted to give more we would never say no to more money!"

I would agree with this - 25 a month (or more) puts some people off.
Even with the drive to get funds, it is larger than any other hackspace membership I have seen.
I think London? hackspace has an 'if you pay more than x then x' in place which would allow people to become members and pay what they feel right paying but perhaps pay more in future when we have a space and they see the benefits of 'x' that they're missing out on.
I also think that the amount each person is paying should be kept to the person dealing with finance's eyes only rather than everyone currently knowing how much everyone pays. If someone pays more then great, they can feel good about it, everyone else knowing someone's paying more doesn't help with anything. No matter how much you pay, if it's above the agreed membership amount of 'x' then you have equal membership/ownership of the hackspace as everyone else.

right, well if its a semantic issue then lets get the wording changed :)
I agree that there should be a level of privacy, though we have an issue of trying to keep all of our finances open. something for further discussion probably.

Finances for public viewing should only ever be a summary of the hackspace's accounts, not details that in any way makes anyone identifiable. I don't really think there is another option personally.

Hi,
Just thought i would jump in, Hello to everyone.
I have been lurking for a while, cant remember how i discovered LHS
but it caught mine and a friend at work's interest. Even though i work
i am on a low wage and im supporting my girlfriend through her
masters. Like Tara i thought the absolute minimum monthly donation was
£25 and simply cant afford that most months.
Not really sure what the point of this message is anymore as i got
distracted by tv half way through writing it so i shall leave it at
that for now.
Cheers,
Owen

Owen, Thanks for getting in contact with us. I think the point of your message was to highlight that the monthly cost comes across as being a minimum amount set in stone and people think if they're not willing/able to pay it then we don't want to hear from them.
I take this opportunity to highlight that this _isn't_ the case -though obviously we need to update our websites to reflect that better.
The community aspect of HS is extremely important and I'm upset to think its suffering because people think all we're interested in is people getting their hands in their pockets.
Don't mis-understand me, the money side is pretty important too. If we want to be able to have our own space then we need regular monthly income. The only way I see of doing this (other than one of us winning the lottery) is by having a user-base that merits and can sustain it, and we get a user base by growing the community, 'cos apart from anything else, the more of us there are, the less we all have to pay (or the bigger the Bat-Cave we can afford).
tldr: We want and need new people to get involved in Hackspace. We need your support. If you can support us financially as well, then even better. And thank you :)

Hi again, I'm glad to hear that isn't the case because the idea behind HS really appeals to me. I am constantly 'tinkering' and think it would be great to get together with like minded people to work on projects. For example, just today I was trying to come up with a clever use for 4 x 12v 82a power supplies I have been given. A task that would probably take minutes if there was a group of people thinking about it rather than just the one. Hopefully I will get a chance to meet you sometime soon. I haven't been along for quite a few months, due to planning a wedding, losing my job and starting a new one. Hopefully I'll find some time one of these days.
Time is the point of my email: I never subscribed to the hackspace, but instead put money in the tin when I went. My reasoning is that while LHS may be worth £25 a month for what you get, and I can (now) afford to lose £25 a month, I don't have the time to make LHS worth that much money to me.
What I would be willing to do is pay a tenner a month to support the project, so that when I need the facility or have the time it will still be there.
So perhaps when you change the wording it would be worth bearing in mind that available time might be as significant as income to what a sensible donation is.
