Perhaps world peace might be a higher priority for some , but a minor tragedy occurred in our home morning.

For a little background, we have a Lecson pre/amp/tuner in our bedroom.    We also live in an RF sinkhole, which makes AM, FM, and cellphone reception always a challenge.   We live ”under the pattern” near some mountains, and the locals aren’t fond of cell towers.

The Lecson tuner actually works well here, and I have a favorite FM station I like to listen to each morning.  Reception can drift on mornings when the local “marine layer” of clouds comes into our valley.   Today was one of those days, which ultimately upset the entire FM balance and domestic harmony here.

Most mornings I make the bed while my wife goes out running while listening to the Lecson/Gale combination.  There was no signal from my normal station, so I slightly moved the tuning wheel while the signal strength meter peaked.

Assuming it was my favorite station (an ad was playing) I got on with making the bed.  Mind you Los Angeles has roughly 60 radio stations, so the dial can be a little crowded.

Sadly, it was not my favorite station, but an FM station 80 miles away.

Playing a Wham! medley, with some ever-so-clever DJ playing Wake Me Up Before You Go Go.

Ugh.  A cruel punishment for myself, the speaker cones, and a general offense to the power company for wasting their time and efforts.

All of which could have been avoided with a DR1 display.

When I was in my 20s and lived in So. FL, there was no such thing as FM rock. A little station in Mt. Dora iirc, started doing album rock. Many of us put up an outdoor FM antenna and got pretty good reception. Is it possible you might be able to do that where you are.......without upsetting the local cattle?

Is this where I get to comment on your wife's legs? or just how loud you play your music? ;) :p

---------------x----------------

Were designs/schematics for the DR1 ever produced, or was it just a concept?

Surprisingly vibrant for products that haven’t changed in 40 years.

All the Gale recordings are on the site to listen to now, we found the first turntable prototype, have our first member from Russia, and working on the turntable schematic….  Even have a professional GS401A poster.

The prices on the Lecson kit have gone through the roof in the last year.   Tuners go for around $2,000 now.  And a AP1/AP3/Tuner set around $4,000.  Some guy even had a new in box set recently.

Still have yours?

Hope all is well at your end of the pipeline.  One of these days I’d love to come and visit.  Or vice versa.

John

Her legs are exceptional.  Thanks for asking.

It’s not so much the loudness but more of an incompatibility.   Think Soft Machine versus Motown.

The Chemo Club?

I have visions of Boy George visiting in full regalia.

Classic.  I know I shouldn’t be laughing, but am nonetheless.

Made my day.   You need to get better so we get more of this…

Hi John

Yes I still have my unused Lecson tuner, plus the AC1 and AP3 Mk2 - all as original. These days though I use LFD (as I'm their global #1 retailer) plus Vandersteen 2C Signature speakers. Meanwhile the finest speakers currently in production are the Vandersteen Model 7.

Kind regards

Howard

Re Soft Machine, sat through too many of their live tedious ramblings at too many 1960's free gigs waiting for Pink Floyd as the headline act. There were murmuring that some hapless audience members would sooner bite their own heads off rather than sit through another experience. Mind you, the same was said about Pete Brown's 'Battered Ornaments' which is a pity 'cos he was occasionally Cream's lyricist.

Ho hum, and so on.

Howard

Well, I'm as better as I'll ever be although the pace of CLL research might mean I can outrun the illness. An intriguing experience though, knowing in advance what is certainly going to kill me, with a rough idea when. I live in the present as much as possible and with a bit of luck hope to get married to my new lady in Muir Woods in North California in the foreseeable future.

From 1976 until their demise #1 I was Lecson largest retailer based purely upon the fact that Dr. Singhania had pissed off nearly all the other retailers - which as luck would have it coincided with the AP3 being declared in Practical HiFi & Audio mag (review by Dave Berriman) as the most musically credible power amp money could buy - or something very close to this.

Anyway, I was the only European retailer who could supply the AP3, and the Tuners. The point being that I never saw a DRI - working or otherwise.
