I have a very strong belief that wikis are better open than closed as an authoring avenue.
The openness promotes and supports community learning which means that it will be a widespread reach out and contribution rather than leaving it to a small group.
 
Our world now needs to bridge these gaps created by lack of knowledge and resources in as far learning is concerned and I am sure that wikis  are here as stepping stones to that cause.
It doesnt all the same eliminate the fact that security is paramount. In my perception, subscription does help to track the contributions from the community and one can easily be locked out if found to be detrimental to the pool.
