INSTRUCTIONS FOR DAY 10 - LAST DAY

Hi everyone,

These are the instructions for Day 10, our last day. We will focus on
creating sub-pages in the wiki (and leave out navigation templates and
categories for the time being).

We will keep this forum open next week for dealing with any last
questions before I unsubscribe participants to prepare for the next
online session and will be asking you for help in providing feedback,
thoughts and suggestions for improving the L4C initiative next week.

The L4C project is very young, and we would appreciate your
suggestions for improvement!

No need to work through the other sections, however, creating subpages
is an important skill for content development.

Please remember that you can make a contribution to the growth of our
WE community…you are now part of our family. Don't forget to invite
two of your friends to join one of the upcoming workshops.

Send an email to two friends or colleagues telling them about your
experience in WE and send a personal invitation for them to join an

BTE I had quite an issue fixing an image that got replaced for "objectives". I couldn't trace via history how it got there, so I presume it was a hacker.

THanks so much for this excellent workshop ... I learned lots and will
probably use this type of environment for my grad course ... I'll make
sure to link the course as it develops back to the Wiki Educator group.

Just a thought ... we are establishing a rich partnership with a
university in East Africa ... one area of partnership around the issue
helping novice academic prepare their articles / manuscripts for
publishing. I'm wondering if a structure / organization already
exists for established academics to partner with novices, using WIKI
Educator to edit and collaborate on articles.

I'm picturing a list of established academics with a sample of their
articles and areas of interests ... novices can contact a particular
individual and invite them to review / make suggestions / edit a
particular article. The ownership and sole authorship rests with the
novice author (critical for their career development); participation
in the project becomes a recognized academic activity for established
scholars that they can use for annual reports (promotion /
advancement) and it will provide a good service for all ...

Thoughts?

If it already exists, I'm happy to promote it ... if it doesn't exist,
I'm happy to get involved and include a few colleagues with journal
editing expertise ...

Greetings, Patricia,

Enough, enough for another day. Great fun, but enough is enough. I missed
three days last week and was gone two more this week, and have been trying
to take in the material in Tutorial 10.

Before I close today, let me give you some feedback, even though I have not
quite completed the work. The experience of the past two weeks of working
through the Tutorials and seeing what some of the other participants are
doing has offered several topics to ponder. As you so correctly surmised by
"seeing the fine red line" in your first reply to my initial inquiry,
Patricia, I had stumbled upon something of which I had no clear
understanding.



I am not a trained educator nor have I studied curriculum development. Even
as I was registering for the program and signing my contract, I really did
not know what I was doing, nor did I fully comprehend in a meaningful way
the commitment which was being required. However what I could see was a
tremendously exciting opportunity which is developing for so many people in
the world. I am reminded of the phrase "if you build it, they will come."
Judging by the responses that you are recieving, this is certainly the case
for WikiEducator.



I have had some insights during the past week or so as to the modest
contribution that I may be able to offer. As I played around with the pages
"Alternative Construction Methods and Materials", and as I recall that I
originally found WikiEd because of my interest in bamboo, and further, as I
discussed these ideas with my son, I think that I would like to work on
something that I will rename "Appropriate Building Materials and Methods for
Ghana". I believe that there is a need to reconsider local materials for
use, particularly in residential housing, and that will only happen when
technical and vocational students are inspired to include new (old) ideas in
their work. Of course, then that phrase comes back in a different form, "if
a course is developed, will students utilize it?"



A couple of questions. First of all, it took me a few days to realize that
you had been playing around with my user page, and I still have not quite
understood all of the changes or the reasons for them. Most recently you
deleted the page which I had so laboriously put up for a reading list - just
to spite you, I reloaded it today, hopefully correctly.



Secondly, am I to understand that we can continue to access the tutorials
after this week, and work on beyond the first 10? If we are running into
difficulties in the future, what options for assistance are there?



There are more questions but my brain is shutting down and I cannot think of
them just now. Thank you for the work that you and Randy and all of those
who are involved in this very important project.

interesting read when you write. There are so many components to your
email that I don't know where to start, so let me try to explain some of
this, if I can:

With the free basic Wiki editing skills online training you received an
opportunity and the introduction to a free/open technology that has made
a great difference in many lives in the Commonwealth and beyond. In
exchange we asked for your signature on a learning contract, indicating
your willingness and acceptance to develop one free lesson in an area
that interest you, which would be of use to the world community. This
could be teacher handouts, a study guide or things like this. We do not
expect you to full develop a course/or course materials unless you have
the expertise to do so and wish to do this. We would certainly not force
anybody's hand, if they can't but we are hoping that this requirement in
exchange for the free training is helping others.

What you describe in terms of what you would like to develop, makes a
lot of sense and will be of great use to students in the
technical/vocational education and training (TVET) area. You could
announce your attention through the Wikieducator mailing list you might
want to join, and see if there is help in our large community, to help
you develop this resource out there. As you know Ghana has a large
WikiEducator community and I am sure you would find like-minded people
to assist you with your great idea.

While our students take our free training we always ask for their user
ids for several reasons, but mainly for the reason, to provide others
with the opportunity to contact them outside of the course, if they
found that similar interests exists for instance, and secondly, to give
the facilitators of the course an opportunity to watch the progress each
student has made (although I can always find out, but it makes it
easier).

With this being said, I go into every user page, to see what has been
done, and if something is not quite the way it should be, I normally
suggest changes, which I am sure I have done with you as well. This
being an open environment, it allows me to "collaborative edit" any page
on the WikiEducator, and it is your right to revert the changes, as this
is the wiki way. I can't recall the particular page you say I have just
deleted but I am sure I had a good reason for doing so, and only with
the intent to help you structure your page a bit better, can't recall.
The history page and comparisons would shed light here what was done at
the time.

With your last point regarding access to the tutorials: All students
will be unsubscribed from this discussion list shortly, to make room for
the next group. You will however always be able to access all tutorials
long after the course has ended, here:
