 I agree while in principle I would gladly give my knowledge, skills, and whatever wisdom I may possess away freely, I do have to support my family and am very glad that students pay tuition so that the college can pay me a living wage...so there is always a balance that I try to maintain by sharing with anyone who asks especially students who need extra help and encouragement...Today I have found myself wondering whether it would be better to publish the textbook I am working on as an OER or to continue to work with an old-fashioned publisher among other things I was wondering if an OER would somehow "get lost" in cyberspace...marketing is one function traditional publishers did fulfill.   How will folks even know that OER texts are available or is there an approach being considered.  Joyce

I think that the community is always more informed than the
individual.  The old tale of three blind men and the elephant!  We are
all victims of our own knowledge and having a forum where others can
broaden and adapt that knowledge is in my opinion a greater benefit to
the whole than "protecting" it from "ratbags" as Sandy so eloquently
put it!

As a professional educator I pay my bills by selling education to
others.  However, I also feel it is my responsibility to share my
knowledge with others for the benefit of the greater good.  These may
seem like opposing principles, but I have to weigh and balance what I
can give away and what to "package" for profit.  My cost based courses
are often more closed system, while my no-cost courses are often open
authored.  For me the difference has been based on personal investment
of time, energy and other resources (including money).  Depending on
the educator's perspective both may be beneficial.  From the student
perspective I think open authoring wins hands down.

Peer review is essential to quality in any open editing environment.

Here at the OER Foundation and WikiEdcuator we support rights of individuals to earn a living -- its a fundamental human right :-) This is why we do not support the non-commercial restriction on our content. 

I don't see the OER versus published textbook as an either /or scenario. It can be both! There are publishers who subscribe to open access publishing and are supportive of materials being released as OER in parallel with the published version -- see for example Athabasca University Press. In fact their is growing evidence that release texts as digital OER increase the sales of the printed versions :-)

A sustainable ecosystem!

 I hope so.  I have been working with a major publisher for several years and would sure like to see my work available to everyone.   I think I have some major contributions to make to the world of community organizing and community development.   Empire State College already works a lot with Athabasca so that is definitely a possibility for at least some of my work.  Thanks for all you do.   Joyce

 I am writing a comprehensive textbook on community organizing...working title Community Organizing: Theory and Practice  I have over forty years of experience in the field, have developed a heuristic framework for six different kinds of organizing, that has been taught to students all over the world (but mostly in the US).   The text is finished and is being used by my own students, but it is kind of in limbo with changes in the publishing world and lack of time on my part during the main academic/teaching year.

Right now it does not have an online community component except as part of the chapter on emotional "Self-help" groups...the book is divided into six primary sections right now..."Place-based/relational initiatives" (all the needs of all the people in a delimited geography"; Social entrepreneurship/social innovation that has to do with projects focused on particular issues/needs; Mutual Aid/Self-help--a two part chapter dealing first with economic mutual aid such as cooperatives, local currencies etc and then with emotional/physical self help (more accurately mutual aid); local advocacy; social movements; and collaboration among institutions and agencies.  There is also a chapter on the meta-networks that sustain such work.  I can clearly see that there is a need for a chapter on online community building.

 

One of my long term experiments has been to unite my online community organizing students in real time on Elluminate and link them with each other and two real communities...it is great fun.   I am very anxious to link my students and me with others who are interested in revitalizing communities.

 

I think that the wikieducator community is an exciting group of like minded people...I am just wondering where the road will lead.   :-)
