# Do you have any concerns about the quality of educational
resources
developed using an open authoring approach? If so, what are
your
concerns? If not, how does an open authoring approach contribute
to
high quality learning materials?
Quite the opposite. I have long been a proponent of unorthodox
course preparation, feeling that when an educator starts from scratch,
the result is far superior than when a person just copies the content and
methods from orthodox sources.
# In your opinion, should course development for education use
closed
or open authoring approaches? Give reasons for your view?
Since there are times when it is appropriate to have one, and other
times appropriate for the other, the author should have an option of
deciding which, and being able to change it. Sometimes outside
"help" can be a hindrance, and mess up the author's thoughts
and train of thinking, and the material should be protected. At other
times, a little push from someone else can result in creative new
synergy.
# What mechanisms can be adopted to assure quality of
educational
content developed in Wiki environments?
As with Wikipedia, WikiEducator should encourage specialists to
review all contributions, and make their objections known, in case there
are errors of fact. However, I am not too strong on this, because I feel
that peer review can stultify creativity and genuinely new contributions
and interpretations.
We encourage contributors to put in references, which can be a good
thing, but too much reliance on that also can hinder creativity.
The very thing that can appear to be a weakness hides an important
strength. Einstein did not put a single reference in his three
revolutionary papers that changed our view of the universe
forever.
