Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

Once there were a sadhu and a farmer. One day the farmer lost his son and he was sitting next to his son's body and lamenting. When the sadhu saw this he went to the farmer and started saying that, "Why should you lament for this material body, we are not this body, we are the spirit soul, the soul is eternal", and things like that. The farmer got convinced and stopped crying. A few days later, to his surprise, the farmer saw the sadhu sitting next to his dead goat and crying. The farmer went running to the sadhu and asked him, "You were the one who spoke so much of philosophy to me on the death of my son. Now why are you lamenting?" For this the sadhu looked up at the farmer and said, "The son was yours but the goat is mine".

We always feel it easy to advise others at the time of miseries, but when we face such incidents in our own lives, it becomes extremely difficult for us to accept. Life is very smooth and sounds happy to us whenever things happen in the way we want it. But the actual test comes when things don't happen "our" way. Complete absorption in the name, fame and glories of the Lord relieves us from the material miseries. While offering their prayers to Supreme Lord Krishna, the Pracetas very nicely say in Srimad Bhagavatam verse 4.30.35 that three things happen when we are absorbed in the nectarean thoughts of the Lord.

yatredyante kathaa mrshtaas / trshnaayaah prashamo yatah
nirvairam yatra bhuteshu / nodvego yatra kashcana

"Whenever pure topics of the transcendental world are discussed, the members of the audience forget all kinds of material hankerings, at least for the time being. Not only that, but they are no longer envious of one another, nor do they suffer from anxiety or fear."

The words 'trshnaayaah prashamo', 'nirvairam' and 'nodvego' are worth meditating in the above verse. We become free from material hankerings, envy and fear when we absorb ourselves in the glories of the Lord. But this absorption is not there all the time and that is because of the non-acceptance of the realities of the material world. Always the question arises, "Why it has happened like this? why it has not happened like that?" We are not able to accept the realities as it is. This non-acceptance gives us a lot of disturbance. Even when we try to chant the holy names of the Lord, the disturbance and agitation is continuously going on and we are not able to concentrate while chanting the holy names. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 1.19.14 we find that Parikshit Maharaj gracefully accepted the curse of the brahmana's son as Krishna's mercy.

tasyaiva me 'ghasya paraavaresho
vyaasakta cittasya grheshv abhikshnam
nirveda mulo dvija shaapa rupo
yatra prasukto bhayam aashu datte

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead, the controller of both the transcendental and mundane worlds, has graciously overtaken me in the form of a bra hmana's curse. Due to my being too much attached to family life, the Lord, in order to save me, has appeared before me in such a way that only out of fear I will detach myself from the world."

Here Parikshit Maharaj accepted that Krishna is the cause of this material and spiritual world and accepted the curse given to him. Although he had the power to neutralise the curse or to counteract with the brahmana's son, he didn't react. Instead he saw it as the merciful glance of Supreme Lord upon him, to purify him. So we can see that from the very beginning, Srimad Bhagavatam is showing how devotees accept the will of the Lord. Srimad Bhagavatam is a treasure house of the glories of Lord and His glorious devotees. So we can see so many great devotees like (Vidurji, Ambarish Maharaj, Kunti Mata, Prahlad Maharaj, Gajendra, Rantideva - the list goes on) accepting the will of the Lord. Srimad Bhagavatam verses 9.21.3 and 4 gives us a glimpse of life of Rantideva. "Rantideva never endeavored to earn anything. He would enjoy whatever he got by the arrangement of providence, but when guests came he would give them everything. Thus he underwent considerable suffering, along with the members of his family. Indeed, he and his family members shivered for want of food and water, yet Rantideva always remained sober."

H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj always says, "Tolerate, accept and adjust. This should be our formula." So we should remember that once we start tolerating, we will not get disturbed; if we don't get disturbed then it is easier to get absorbed in the lotus feet of the Lord and once we get absorbed it is easier to accept the will of providence.

We pray at the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord Krishna, Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev to bestow this quality upon us, so that we accept the will of providence and absorb ourselves in His glories.

Thank you very much.
Your humble servants,
Vijay and Suchithra.
