Good afternoon!

This morning in Lean Coffee, one of the topics that was brought up, but not enough time to get to was:

What companies in Puget Sound use Agile?

Does a list exist somewhere?  If so, where?

If not, might you be willing to help the person who brought that question up and others by identifying companies using Agile?

·         For the purpose of research when people are in job transition?

·         Send back to me direct (dyl...@earthlink.net) and I’ll collate a list for folks.

Would this breakdown be helpful?

A.   Scrum with Scrum Masters in IT, (and similar to Scrum)

B.    Lean in IT,

C.    Agile in IT

D.   Lean in non-IT area of company, i.e. service area, mfg area, operations, business side

E.    Agile project management for non-IT area of company, i.e. service area, mfg area, operations, business

F.    Not using any of these as of (date)

I have been impressed with the work of the Lean / Agile Group in Vancouver BC.  They have been able to put on some interesting conferences and workshops. They have also been able to gather a large membership. I think that they would be able to answer a question like this quicker because of that large membership and large database of info about people coming to the conferences.
http://agilevancouver.ca/

I also notice a lot of Tech conferences in Portland this year.

I think the idea of a database of Agile companies for Seattle is a great idea.
I wonder if one way to get more data for that database is to run a biggish conference around software/agile/coding....

If I were working on the list, I would do three additional things from what was suggested. First, I would look down the geekwire startup list and add them to the fodder of companies to look at. Secondly, I would find the NAICS codes of all the companies on your lists, and find all the other companies with the same NAICS code in the INFOUSA databse. Then thirdly, I would email out on some of the tech lists like Lean Startup Seattle and Seattle Tech STartups a survey about Agile practices.

(PS, I run the Lean Startup Seattle meetup. send me a survey if you want it posted to that group)

PNW agile shops:
SolutionsIQ
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has some agile teams.
All Recipes.
AT&T has some agile teams.
Blue Origin has at least one agile team.
Zynga (Satellite offices in Seattle) has some Agile teams.
...
I'm sure I know 4x that number, but that's what came off the top of my head just now to start the list.

Expedia - Expedia Worldwide Engineering division has 700 people doing Scrum well. There is a lot more Agile in the company, but I don't know the other divisions as well.
Amazon - lots and lots of Scrum on various teams; some also doing Extreme Programming.

I've worked both places on Scrum and XP teams.

Oddly enough, Alaska Airlines.  I know that one person there, Amy Lyman, is utilizing Agile Methodologies but she isn't in the tech space.  She is a policy/planner in their Environmental Affairs division.  Was the intent to  include all companies using Agile methodologies or to stay focused on Agile's traditional hunting ground, the tech sector?   In Diana's framework below she could be a lonely second in Category E with Joe.  Or maybe Joe needs his own "lean manufacturing" letter.  Maybe Z for Zzzzzoooommmm.

As an FYI the NAICS codes may be 541512 (Computer Systems Design Service) or 541511 (Custom computer programming).

I do not know of a Agile specific NAICS code but I have 541611 for General Management Consulting and there is a 541618 for Other Management Consulting.

Ha,

This is not a possible list to gather. For example, I know much of Alaska Air Group is nowhere near healthy process (agile or otherwise) so is the acceptance criteria for the list a whole org or anybody in the org has a personal kanban? ;-)

I bet there are a ton of companies where some part has healthy process. Choosing orgs to call "Agile" seems kind of silly to me. :-)
