We're moving up in the world! Mitch Freed has created a little web app
for entering song data. It works great in Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.
Support for IE is coming soon. You can find it here:

http://174.126.51.109/~ldsmusic/

So going forward, instead of attaching the songs as .rtf or .docx
or .txt files in the issue tracker, just go to this app, select the
collection you're working on (collections are named Collection-
Language-Set; all of the song assignments are marked as either "A" or
"B"; so if you're working on hymns 21-40 in Spanish from set A, select
"Hymns-EN-A"). Then enter the song number. It will load all the data
we have for that song (which will probably be nothing so far). Then
fill in all the data and click save.

Please, provide any feedback. Will this work? Are we missing
something? Any ideas? Because we have SO MANY languages to work on,
and SO MANY songs, we're trying to streamline the process as much as
possible so that the work you're volunteering is as efficient and
productive as possible.

Thanks,
Hilton

Sorry, the collection example was wrong. Here's the language codes:

EN = English
ES = Spanish (Espanol)
PT = Portuguese
FR = French

So, do you want me to make the corrections I find to the EN Hymns and
Children's Songbook lyrics at this location instead of send you email?

Yes, but I'll need to get the English songs put in first, so you can
just update them. In the meantime you can just email me. I'll let you
know once I get them in.

I got IE fixed up. Let me know if anyone has issues with the app or
suggestions for improvement.

Hi Arlea,

You can make changes to the English Hymns and Children's Songs
directly at http://174.126.51.109/~ldsmusic/ now. Thanks for getting
those on there, Mitch!

Using the input form, would we put, for example "Avec assurance, 84-100" as the mood, or just "Avec assurance"? Also, where should we put the scriptures?

Just put "Avec assurance" for the mood. No need to input the scripture... in looking into the scriptures, I've found they are the same across all languages. We'll have some code that produces the correct scripture reference in the user's language.

I've been typing in Italian hymns and there are a few I don't recognize from the English hymnal. Then again, I noticed at least some (if not all) of these don't have any scripture references either...

There are a few Spanish songs that aren't in the English hymnal as well. We'll probably have to do another pass on these songs when we add scriptures to the app, but fortunately there are very few of them.

There's a handy chart on the church web site for comparing language hymns:
Unfortunately, it doesn't show hymns that are only in one language other than English...
There are also versions in Spanish, French, and Portuguese:

It would help if the form contained an additional "Comments/Notes"
field. Some of these may need special instructions for anyone looking
to do further processing, error correction, etc. One example is
French hymn 131 (Dans la Judée, beau pays de Dieu): It has several
parts (Melody, Tenor, Bass) with different words for each. Specifying
in the comments would explain why its text is slightly different. Or,
hymn 133 (Il est né le divin Enfant) where the chorus is sung before
the stanzas. We don't want someone to go through and see "oops, the
person entered the chorus/verses backward... I'll fix that..."

I would have "helpfully" swapped the chorus around on 133.

What do you think, Mitch, would it be possible to have a notes field?
It would need to be included in the JSON like any other field, but
when importing, if the notes field is missing in the JSON, we should
keep whatever notes are already in the database for that song.

Also, if the there is more than one song on the same page (as is the case often in the Children's Songbook) be sure to enter the number followed by an "a" (for the first song on the page) or a "b" (for the second song on the page). For example, the two songs on page 118 of the Portuguese Children's Songbook are 118a and 118b.

I would like to verify a few things before I put hymns in the MWA:

Are we supposed to add all verses in the same or individual text boxes (i.e. one verse per box or one box for verses and one box for the chorus)?
Should we include verse numbers at the beginning of each verse or simply have the words?

Thanks,

Whitney

One verse per box.

The chorus should be repeated after every verse in its own box (with the chorus box checked).

Do not include verse numbers at the beginning of each verse. Spanish and English songs do, but that will be changed shortly.

Thanks!

The French ones do as well, so those will have to be edited out as well.

Hi,

Just a quick question about one feature that had been discussed earlier regarding the ability to switch language from within a hymn. As you, the hymn numbers are not in sync between language. For example, hymn# 35 in english corresponds to hymn# 17 in Portuguese.

The previous LDS Hymns application had a feature where you could open a given hymn in english, press the language button to select a different language (spanish or portuguese) and the user was taken to the corresponding hymn in the selected language. That feature, although I remember discussing it earlier, did not make the cut so far. At this point, the LDS Music app only allows you to select a language before you select a hymn. If english is not one's first language and you want to follow a hymn in your own language if you're in an all english ward, this is a bit frustrating. Church interpreters/translators (I'm being one of them) also use this feature extensively.

The actual correspondence of church hymns between languages is in a spreadsheet prepared by the church that I had also submitted earlier, but just in case, you can find it attached to this email.

This is a cool feature, but not all features are created equal. This seems like a feature a very small percentage our users would use.

David Weiss

Hi,

Are there any plans to include this feature in the application? This would be extremely useful.

Thanks,

Agreed. I loved this feature in Ricky's app and would certainly use
it if it were added to the current app.

Yes, we're planning to include it in the counterpart selector, probably sooner than later.
