Subject: Cornell Workshop on 3/22-3/23
Tom Bruce and the Cornell Legal Information Institute will host an in-
depth advanced technical workshop 3/22 and 3/23. The workshop is
invitation only, if you would like to attend please send a note to Tom
dot Bruce at Cornell.

The purpose of the workshop is to discuss and document existing
standards work, in particular the requirements of a clear
specification for “Level 2” markup of judicial opinions. “Level 2”
means “a metadata standard compatible with, but not going much beyond,
that which is found on the four corners of the opinion, or can be
reasonably expected to be in a document-management system”. Level 1
would be simple qualified Dublin Core. Levels beyond 2 would take in
more controversial things, such as a system for describing procedural
posture, a more elaborate citation specification, and so on.

Other items to be discussed are existing standards efforts including
the MetaLex standard that is gaining traction in the EU (which we have
made work with the US Code, and will work on with CFR), and the
URN:lex standard being fronted by ITTIG. AkomaNtoso is another well-
constructed alternative.

An agenda and reading list is now available for the Cornell Workshop:

The agenda contains a number of useful pointers to current standards
efforts.
