The Fencing Club Diary
Dear Fencers,
Here are a couple of events for your diaries.
Best wishes
Rupert
The Lansdowne International Challenge
Friday 22 October
6:30 Drinks
7:00 Fencing begins
There are just three weeks to go before the Lansdowne International
Challenge. This year the Japanese National Team are competing against the
British Team. There are a limited number of tickets available as the
Ballroom capacity is limited to 150 spectators so I advise you to contact
Danielle Smith in the Events Department as soon as possible to pay for your
tickets. Danielle’s email address is DanielleSm...@lansdowneclub.com or by
020 7318 6115. Ticket prices are £14 for members, £18 for guests and £10
for children (up to 16 years)
The Razzle-Dazzle 75th Anniversary Ball
Friday 5 November
This year’s Fencing Club Dinner/Dance has been cancelled at the Club’s
request. Instead we have agreed to take part in the Club Razzle-Dazzle Ball
on Friday 5 November. Tickets are available through the Events Department
again with Danielle Smith. Call or email her and don’t forget to tell her
that you would like to be put on a Fencing Club table.
Lastly, The London Regional Fencing AGM is going to be taking place on 13
October. One of our fencers, Alistair Bird, has put his name forward for
Treasurer. All those who are members of British Fencing can vote in this
election and so I suggest that we put our support behind Alistair for this
position.
Alistair send me the following message:
Hi Rupert,
You may well be aware that the London Region AGM takes place on 13th
October at Sussex House. Full details are on the London Region website a
link to which follows. http://www.londonregionfencing.co.uk/
Mark Nelson Griffith is the current Chair and there are a number of other
officials and elected members all of whom come up for re-election each year
at the AGM.
The London Region is trying to become more active each year and it is hoped
to make further progress this year. As well as the regular activities, such
as running the London Youth Championships and the Novices & Intermediates
Competition, London now enters a team for the Cadet Winton each year.
Particularly with 2012 coming up, London should be at the forefront of
helping build the infrastructure for fencing in the Capital. There are ideas
to run more London-based competitions, run work-shops on armoury skills,
refereeing as well as sessions to help train fencers to get coaching
qualifications. You may have your own ideas about what the London Region
should be working towards. All this takes time and effort from the
volunteers who sit on the committee. It is therefore very important that
everyone who is interested in, and who cares about, fencing tries to take
part in the AGM, even though this may sound rather tedious!
I think it would be a good idea to encourage the Lansdowne Fencers to attend
the AGM or, at least, to cast their vote on the membership of the Committee.
Each Club has a vote (and you should have been notified of the AGM
separately) and, subject to certain conditions, each paid up member of
British Fencing who lives or fences in London also has a vote.
It is hoped to have some new faces on the committee with fresh ideas and
energy and, while I cannot claim to have these attributes, I am being
encouraged to stand as Treasurer. I have yet to decide if I should stand but
will make up my mind this week.
Even if eligible members cannot attend, they can register their vote by
proxy, including by giving the Chairman the right to cast their vote. A form
of proxy is also on the London Region website.
I wonder if you think it would be a good idea to alert Members of the
Lansdowne Fencing Club of this Meeting so as to give them the opportunity to
attend or vote. What do you think?
I hope to see you at the Club over the next few weeks.
Kind Regards,
Alistair
