Red Planet is a "chemical-free" vegetable farm located on Greenville Ave in Johnston, RI. We run a CSA, sell to restaurants and at the Armory Park Farmers' Market. Right now, we need some extra help around the farm, and so are offering work-shares in our CSA. For those not familiar with this arrangement, it means you become a member of our CSA in exchange for 1 day of work per week. The work varies and is dependent on your skill-set, but here are a few typical farm chores that are almost always happening: weeding, picking, washing, mowing, raking, hoeing, spreading compost, feeding chickens, greenhouse work, carpentry, planting, irrigation maintenance, pruning, rototilling etc. What you get: A generous pile of seasonal produce each week which is usually worth $20-30, fresh air, exercise, sunshine, and hopefully a bit of farming knowledge that you didn't have before. We are looking for folks who can plan to work 1 day a week until at least Nov. 1. If you like the work and want to keep at it longer, we'll have need of labor right up til Christmas.
yup, we can still use some help! weeding is really a serious priority
right now, so that's great. let's talk about days you can come out.
email, or text 401-273-0914. calling is fine too! but voicemail has a
tendency to be unnoticed.
thanks,
Catherine

Hi Catherine, I'm not sure if you are still looking for help but, I'm available Mon, Wed, or Fri. I have a large garden myself, chickens, weed, mow, plant, and prune plants around the yard (not fruit trees, but don't need much instruction). I'd love to learn more.

Hello Mary,
Sounds good. We are still looking, as we had a no-show. Monday and Weds.
especially are days we need help. It would be great if you wanted to come
and say hi tomorrow (weds.) just to chat and get a sense of the place; if
you're up for it, you could try your hand at a few chores.
If Wednesday doesn't work to meet, throw out a few other days!

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you all yet, school just started and I'm
trying to nail down a final schedule. I can come up for a few hours Friday
9/21 morning (7am-10:30?) or Saturday 9/22 (same time) if that's acceptable

I discovered this group a few minutes ago, and it might be too late, seeing that it's October and the beginning of the frost. I'm going to give this a shot anyway; I really want to work in farming again. I served with City Year in Washington, DC a few years ago, and despite the fact that I was an HIV/AIDS teacher for the year, I was also the *de facto* gardener/green thumb for the entire corps that year. I absolutely loved it. I'm in grad school now in Providence, and I'm studying public health. I needed a part-time job, so I've been working at Trader Joe's for the past year now, but I want a change, and I want something more visceral and more terrene. I love the feeling of dirt in my hands and planting plants waiting for something to grow months later.
I can easily volunteer/work one day a week to start. You noted on an earlier post that you need people for Mondays and Wednesdays. I can drive out to the farm to meet you this coming Thursday evening or Friday morning to meet with you, as I really want to get started with something somewhere!
You can reach me at ampson.ha...@gmail.com and at 240-449-9305. Please let me know what you need, and if you can't accommodate me or my interests, please point me in the direction of a farm that can.
