I see in the blog that on the 19th: Common Hawker (frequent). I've
never seen Common Hawker at Brockholes, and it doesn't appear
elsewhere on the blog. Were these positively identified (by yellow
costa, or long ante-humeral stripes, for instance), or just assumed by
jizz?

Thanks for pointing that out, Colin.

It was an error in transposition which has now been corrected. It should have read Common Darter!

Mike.

:-)

I was ready to mention that I have frequently mis-identified by
relying on the jizz difference between Common Hawker and Migrant
Hawker. Most noticeably when I was convinced I had finally seen a
Migrant Hawker in Eskdale, Cumbria, whizzing all around me. It took a
netting to correct that one.

I've never (knowingly) managed to confuse Common Hawker with Common
Darter though :-)

(not really that amusing, as I've sometimes confused Common Darter
with Migrant Hawker - at great distance they are quite similar in
size, and if they're against the light, there's not much else to go
on).

Colin,
I counted 22 Migrant Hawkers yesterday afternoon at the southern
end of Birkdale Green Beach and adjacent slacks. Included were several pairs
and females ovipositing. Also lots of Common Darters and a late Emerald
Demselfly.

Phil.
