Hawes Water / Leighton Moss - 19th May.
The weather was overcast and cold. Two young people new to
dragonflies joined me and we found just one emergent Azure Damselfly.
Nevertheless they were very pleased, and keen to see more. So a
Success, of sorts.

Hurst Grange Park / Priory Meadow - 27th May
Marvellous weather, but no-one turned up (including the three who
had booked) apart from me. Excellent dragonfly day for me though.

Cuerdon Valley Park - 16th June
Atrocious weather. Even I called off. Only David turned up.
Effectively cancelled by bad weather.

Brockholes - 8th July
Weather so bad that even organiser Allen didn't bother. Effectively
cancelled by bad weather.

Cross of Greet, Bowland - 15th July.
Weather was cool and windy. 7 people turned up including Allen and
I. We managed to see our target species of Golden Ringed Dragonfly
(one of each sex, and everyone got photos of the female), as well as a
Common Hawker, and adder and a slow worm. Then on to a site near
Grindleton where we added another 5 or 6 species to the day's tally.
Successful.

Birkdale Sands - 29th July
Weather cool and breezy. Allen and I joined Phil and he managed to
find the target species for us (one solitary male Ruddy Darter, plus
quite a lot of Emerald Damselflies) and several other species (not
just dragonflies). Successful.

Highfield Moss - 19th August.
Cancelled owing to a diary oversight.

4 members of this list put in at least one appearance. 7 other people
joined us in total.

Overall, not a very promising first season. That's perhaps largely
because of the third worst summer in 300 years (I think that's what
they said on Radio 4). Viewed in that light, it's far from a
disastrous start. Are we going to organise another programme for next
year? Opinions please.

Colin,
I don't mind organising a couple of trips next year. I'm doing
them all the time, so it's not a problem. We do need some decent weather
however!

Phil.

I think we should plan trips for next year. I am on Cuerden most days except for August when I help on stalls at various fairs.

Colin,
Due to the unpredictable weather, but mainly because of the lack of interest, I
feel that I don`t want to organise any further field meetings.

I found the lack of interest discouraging too.

So let's find out the prospective interest for next year from members
of this list. Could every subscriber please say:

If you would be likely to come to at least one field meeting should we
organize a programme for next year.
(and optionally, if you would be willing to organize one yourself)
Also, what you would like to see from this group. More (or less) of
the same thing? Other suggestions?

I would attend at least one field meeting apart from another one on Cuerden. ( which I would again organise). I still have trouble accessing the  web page so I am sure I do not see all the posts I should. Any suggestions?

Colin, as I mentioned to you at the start of the year, commitments elsewhere mean that I’m not sufficiently free to be able to organise a field trip. As for participation on one, it would depend on when/where (and of course the weather).

Mike.

There were several at Mere Sands Wood today (as expected).

What I didn't expect was to see one perched horizontally, like a gomphid or a libelluid. Indeed, after thinking about it, I'm sure I've never seen one do that before.
