For the first year since I started looking in 2006, I've not seen any Large Red Damselflies in April.

I suppose it was to be expected.

Colin,
Same on the Sefton Coast; very few insects about and certainly no Odonata.

No previous Lancashire records. But I think it occurs in both Cheshire and Cumbria.

It certainly occurs in Cumbria on the moors. I hope to see some myself tomorrow in Eskdale.

It seems very odd that it isn't widespread in East Lancashire. But we seem to be a hole in the distribution of many species.

I saw a possible briefly at Langden Valley many years ago at one of the GRD sites but, despite searching over many years,I didn`t manage to confirm it.

What I regard as the confirmed list is copied below.

Doesn't include Vagrant Emperor. (Colin, can you remind me of the details of this - it ought to be recorded even if not confirmed).

Let me know if  the list doesn't look correct/complete.

Other species that have been claimed include Hairy Hawker and Variable Damselfly but neither has been confirmed.

As an update to this record, a male Keeled Skimmer was recorded at Spurn Bird  Observatory on 16/7/13 which was a first record for the reserve and only the second for VC61 so,presumably, some kind of movement of what is regarded as a sedentary species.

Allen,

Just been speaking with Pete Marsh who records that area for moths.

He says that Cross of Greet straddles the boundary of VCs60 & 64 - just to make things even more complicated.

One more reason as far as I'm concerned simply to record by grid reference and political boundary.

All the best,

Steve.

Allen,
Sorry to be a nuisance.  Where is the barrier? How far is the walk?

Phil,
The barrier is at the edge of the forest. It doesn`t block you but the track down is very rough and may damage your car.The walkis only 50-100 yds and the site is obvious when you get there.
When you drive up through Grindleton be sure to take straight track at the very sharp right hand bend about a mile above the pubs and the rest is straightforward.

I had a reliable report today of a Golden Ringed Dragonfly in June this year at Twiston moor near Pendle Hill. It was on private property. I don`t know of any other records outside Bowland.
Perhaps Steve can help with that.
It seems to have been an excellent year for Common Hawker.I have seen them at a few new sites.

Does that include the Vagrant Emperor mentioned in the BDS journal the other year? I was never clear if it was a definite sighting or a possibility?

Allen,

There are a handful of records outside of Bowland.

I have 6 records in SD47 and one site in SD57 in north Lancashire (possibly within the Bowland AONB but outside the SSSI) but none more recent than 1990.

Also 3 from the West Pennine Moors (SD61), most recently in 2006 but with little evidence that there is a regular population there - certainly Steve Martin has not seen any since 1987.

Plus two records in Rossendale (SD82), most recently in 1993 but I believe they're still found on the Yorkshire side of the South Pennines.

Could you let me have a grid reference and recorder's name for this Twiston record.

All the best,

Steve.

On 26/9/13, I photographed 2 male Southern Hawkers at Hurstwood pond near Burnley.I saw them both together but when I looked at the images they both had marks on their antehumeral stripes making it possible to identify them individually.
I returned to the pond on 27/9/13 and again 2 males were present along with a female. When I observed the males at rest and photographed them,I saw that they were both different individuals than the previous day.
If the first 2 had not had markings on their thorax,I would have assumed that they were the same 2.
The second 2 had no such markings so I will be unable to tell if more males are involved.
