I could do the Golden Ringed in Bowland if you want.I know a good site where they are almost guaranteed.I could also do East Lancs as iI know the area well. Also my first choice would be Brockholes as it is my local patch.

Subject: [lancashire-dragonflies] Hawes Water, to look for Hairy Dragonfly, and other ideas
Date: Saturday, 11 February, 2012, 10:20
So I was thinking of a walk on May 19th (or perhaps 26th - both are Saturdays) to look at Hawes Water, then on via Trowbridge LNR to Leighton Moss, and then to Bank Well. There should be a good variety of spring species to see, but I had in mind the particular goal of looking to see if Hairy Dragonfly (Brachytron pratense) might be breeding at Hawes Water, or elsewhere in the area. Harry Shorrock saw one briefly at Hawes Water in 2009, when recording something botanical. The only reason he didn't report it was the possibility that it was something else migrating from the continent, but I personally strongly discount such a possibility. According to the books, this species normally takes at least 2 years to reach adulthood, so last year I looked on a couple of occaisions, but the first time was probably too early (they were only emerging in Cheshire on that same day), and after that conditions were not good. I can organise this one.
I think it might be a good idea to have a specific theme in mind when thinking of planning other walks too. Some ideas that come to mind:
Looking for Golden ringed Dragonfly (Cordulegaster boltonii) in the forst of Bowland area (does anyone know the area well enough to plan such a walk).
A walk in the moorland areas of East Lancashire with Black Darters and Common Hawkers in mind (anyone?).
A walk through Cuerden Valley Park with Banded Demoiselles specifically in mind (I'm told it's good for them, but the lack of public transport means I've never gone to see for myself - David, could you plan this?).
Somewhere on the Sefton coast with Ruddy Darters in mind (Phil S.?).
That would cover most areas of the (modern) county, except the Fylde region. We ought to have at least one meeting in that area, too.

I think maybe the first week in July, preferably 7th or 8th as it`s the final of the Euros on the 1st.I can`t make May 26th for the Hawswater one as I am away.
Not sure about the East Lancs one,I will give it some thought but probably late Aug/Sept.
The site at Cross of Greet for Golden Ringed is a good site for lots of other things like birds such as Ring Ouzel,Hen Harrier,Peregrine,Whinchat,Spotted Flycatcher,Wheatears.Plus Adders,Green Tiger Beetles. There should be Common Hawkers too but probably a bit early in early July. |
