Good.
Can you suggest dates for the first two?

A Brockholes day is certainly a good idea. I think it would be something to fit in when we have the rest of the dates (at least provisionally) lined up, as it is a good site all the year round.

Subject: [lancashire-dragonflies] Hawes Water, to look for Hairy Dragonfly, and other ideas

So I was thinking of a walk on May 19th (or perhaps 26th - both are Saturdays) to look at Hawes Water, then on via Trowbridge LNR to Leighton Moss, and then to Bank Well. There should be a good variety of spring species to see, but I had in mind the particular goal of looking to see if Hairy Dragonfly (Brachytron pratense) might be breeding at Hawes Water, or elsewhere in the area. Harry Shorrock saw one briefly at Hawes Water in 2009, when recording something botanical. The only reason he didn't report it was the possibility that it was something else migrating from the continent, but I personally strongly discount such a possibility. According to the books, this species normally takes at least 2 years to reach adulthood, so last year I looked on a couple of occaisions, but the first time was probably too early (they were only emerging in Cheshire on that same day), and after that conditions were not good. I can organise this one.

I think it might be a good idea to have a specific theme in mind when thinking of planning other walks too. Some ideas that come to mind:

Looking for Golden ringed Dragonfly (Cordulegaster boltonii) in the forst of Bowland area (does anyone know the area well enough to plan such a walk).

A walk in the moorland areas of East Lancashire with Black Darters and Common Hawkers in mind (anyone?).

A walk through Cuerden Valley Park with Banded Demoiselles specifically in mind (I'm told it's good for them, but the lack of public transport means I've never gone to see for myself - David, could you plan this?).

Somewhere on the Sefton coast with Ruddy Darters in mind (Phil S.?).

That would cover most areas of the (modern) county, except the Fylde region. We ought to have at least one meeting in that area, too.

I think maybe the first week in July, preferably 7th or 8th as it`s the final of the Euros on the 1st.I can`t make May 26th for the Hawswater one as I am away.
Not sure about the East Lancs one,I will give it some thought but probably late Aug/Sept.
The site at Cross of Greet for Golden Ringed is a good site for lots of other things like birds such as Ring Ouzel,Hen Harrier,Peregrine,Whinchat,Spotted Flycatcher,Wheatears.Plus Adders,Green Tiger Beetles. There should be Common Hawkers too but probably a bit early in early July.

OK. We'll make it the 19th for the Hawes Water walk (I was inclined to that day anyway).

I doubt if I will be in the country in the first week of July, unfortunately (it's possible - Haiwa hasn't arranged our dates for our China summer holiday yet - so maybe I can arrange to get back on the 6th).

I guess we need not be too concerned about dates for anything later than that yet - if we could get a poster out for the first half of the season by the beginning of April, that should be good.

When we advertise the meetings in detail (on the BDS website), we will want details of the meeting place and time, with directions on how to get to places (for somewhere like Brockholes, a pointer to a web page should be sufficient), including via public transport where possible. Also approx. length and degree of difficulty of any walking.

We also have to consider if numbers need to be limited, and if the meeting is liable to cancellation for very poor weather. In either case, it should be stated that the meeting is for pre-booking only, with a telephone and/or email contact for booking.

In the case of the Hawes Water walk, I'm going to say non-cancellable, since it would be worthwhile searching for exuvia alone, in this particular case. At least, I will trun up. That doesn't mean anyone else will necessarily though!

I'm sure 14th or 15th will be just as good for Golden Ringed, they should still be about

OK. That sounds good.
I think Phil's Mere Sands Wood walk/talk is scheduled for the 14th, so the 15th would be better. Haiwa will be driving by then, so we will both go (she loves Golden Rings - ever since one landed on her leg on the first day of our honeymoon).

The only problem with the Golden Ringed site is there will be very few other Odonata sp. if any at all as it's a very specialised habitat which is why I mentioned the birds and insects.I suppose an alternative could be to combine it with another site.

Perhaps Carole's contact can suggest a second site?

Langden valley is another good site for GRD but it's a 30 min walk and perhaps not as reliable.
