I have a few invites for MakerBot Operators in LA to show up to a TED
party with MakerBots and operate them at the party.
It's going to be on Thursday Feb 11 at 10:30PM till late in Long Beach
so you'd show up at like 10pm and print stuff until late at night. It
would be a cool opportunity to rub elbows with some interesting people
and blow their minds.
If you're interested, let me know off list at b...@makerbot.com.

Miles and I brought our bots to the party, and I dragged Carlyn Maw
from CrashSpace down to help with crowd control.
The party was sorta split into two rooms. Miles was in the main room
with the (fantastic) musicians, and Carlyn and I were
in the outer atrium area. We got setup before 10 and were cranking out
small objects and talking with super intelligent/creative people.
(who also tend to have lots of $ to attend TED :-)
The party was hosted by the NationalLabDay.org folks who hook up
educators/scientists/engineers for projects, etc. (see web site for
better description)
Miles was showing off his heated platform and built some bigger parts
(even a shot glass). I stuck with CrashSpace logos and key rings.
People seemed to greatly enjoy seeing the bots. Many had heard of
them and were excited to see them in person.
Some people were disappointed in the lower quality/care & feeding
required but since Carlyn and I had just come from the Pacific Design
& Automation show
we were able to talk about the higher end machines. I had some nice
samples from $500k+ boxes to compare. I think they understood our
niche.
The NLD folks are planning to have an LA event sometime this year and
asked us to come back for that.
I'm sure we can get a few more bots lined up for that!!!
We didnt leave Long Beach till after 2am - the musicians were so
awesome we hung out for extra time to listen to them.
Miles, you care to add anything here?
I created a Thought To Thing diagram to depict an overview of object
creation and printing with a MakerBot. You can download it here:

Jerry, Carlyn, and I were positioned in different areas to maximize
crowd draw. I was in the main room with the musicians, they were in
the entry. I had a few fails due to my frenemy Chippy, he loves to
hide in the plastruder pulley at inopportune moments. I air-blasted
Chippy away and began printing a little before 10 PM.
I met people from all over the world and they MakerBot got it! I spoke
to a few TED presenters one of whom, Daphne Singo, hung around for
quite a while asking all sorts of knowledgeable questions. Before she
left I gave her a whistle. I tried to engage the Tesla guys but they
were too busy enjoying the music. All in all, I printed and gave away
a couple whistles, one of Zach's four-finger shot glasses (that's a
generous pour), and a couple mini-Cupcake ornaments. At moments I felt
like a DJ; there was so much anticipation for the next print that I
had to cue up the next STL in skeinforge as soon as the current print
started, lest the momentum stop. Next time I'll have my greatest hits
on a couple SD cards ready to rock.
I also debuted the alpha of my printable stencil cutter toolhead. I'll
upload it to thingiverse this week.
The music was so good that one of the guys that watched Curio128 print
for quite a while, paused a print so as not to compete. When I
noticed, the Borg glob of ABS was threatening to take over the print.
It was a Fail/Win (aren't they all?).
I haven't looked online for the music, but it will hopefully be out
there soon; many iPad-minis were recording the magic. These were some
of the musicians: transcendent Ukelele player Jake Shimabukuro and
phenomenal string-quartet Ethel.
Go!

I missed your printable stencil cutter toolhead. You'll have to show it off at one of our monthly meetings at CrashSpace.
Thanks for adding your feedback --- and for coming down!!
Jerry
Congrats on the event!! Sounds fantastic and what a great showing.
and Miles -- that Thought to Thing diagram is *absolutely* awesome!
very visually appealing while also telling a huge story. I'm going to
print out a bunch in color for when anyone asks about digital
fabrication. so excellent!!
