Choreographer Scott Hislop utilizes highly stylized gestures and bird-like movements to portray the tight-laced society of pre-revolution France. Eventually shedding their fanciful exoskeleton of broadened hips and padded shoulders, the dancers evolve and transform into their natural forms, breaking from the formalities of this society and coming in contact with their more carnal instincts. For his work, Adam Parson reflects on a recent trip to Kenya where he observed women who were pressured by male figures to remain subservient and committed to their destined role in society, but began to fight back in a lust for something greater. While on a journey to fetch water each day, the women diverge from this task and instead walk miles upon miles to reach a school house where they secretly learn to read, write and think for themselves. Through the attainment of an education, they free their minds and create their own destiny unbridled by the expectations of their community. And for Kate Hutter, her work questions what our potential is as individuals and as a society, and if we have lowered our expectations of people’s greatness. She grapples with this question by portraying a group of teenagers, who seemingly are uninspired, unmotivated and apathetic, yet over the course of the piece, become active and emboldened by the potency of their ideas and begin to react with greater verve to the world around them.
In preparation for the show, LACDC will be hosting their bi-annual “Open Bar / Open Rehearsal” fundraising event where the public will have the opportunity to sit in on rehearsals and learn about the creative process while sipping cocktails and enjoying the lounge atmosphere of LACDC’s hip downtown rehearsal space. “Open Bar / Open Rehearsal” will take place Saturday, November 7 from 7 – 10pm at the Brockus Project Studios located at 618B Moulton Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90031. Admission is a suggested donation of $15.
