The triangular shape was distictive and so recognisable as a bus stop
sign from distances beyond readablity. You knew it was a bus stop
even if in shadow or glare.
Rectangular bus stop signs have space for more information, but from
a distance resemble any other information sign on a pole. They could
be parking hour signs or anything.
Some places used (& use?) triangular top bus stop signs with rectangular
extensions below for detailed lists of lines. This kept the easily
recognisable pointy top shape while allowing more information.
