Next to the Mongolian Grill in the next University Plaza, in the
former-former-home of PC Waterloo, Casa Salsa opened this week.
I haven't been yet. I hear it's super-busy. Will try soon.
mmmmmm...mexican.

I had take-out for lunch.
Ambiance: typical Mexican hole-in-the-wall, TV blasting some Mexican music
videos, cactuses on the walls. Absence of large sombreros and black velvet
paintings is noted.
You order by going to the left of the counter, taking a strip of paper,
and filling out what you want. Burritos, quesadillas, tostadas, etc. : each
type gets a different strip of paper. I chose a burrito. Your choices
for burritos are:
Type: chicken, beef, breakfast, or beans & peppers
With: lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, feta, cheddar, onion
Salsa: mild green, red medium, spicy chipotle, Xtra hot habanero, spicy
green, mole
Sides: Pico de gallo, guacamole, rice, beans, gallo pinto
I had the beef burrito, $6.25. It was reasonably large, with steak,
not ground beef. I would have preferred more sauce; it was a little dry.
Altogether: not a bad take-out. I'd go back occasionally.
A small correction: the TV was blasting the _same_ Mexican music video
over and over again. Alas, that did not improve the ambiance.
But the burrito, while not transcendant, was perfectly acceptable. The
rice side dish was nothing special, but is easily avoided. I'm sure
I'll go back.

I guess the real question is, how does it compare
with all the other Mexican restaurants in the area?
What other Mexican restaurants in the area? The only place I can
think of is Latino's in Guelph and I would NEVER recommend that place
to anyone.
I believe Mr. Butterworth neglected to add a ":)" to the end of his
sentence.
:)
Darcy.
On that note, any further word on the Mayan Grill's rumoured
relocation to Waterloo?
I've heard rumours of a good Mexican restaurant in Guelph. Does
anyone have any suggestions? (Was Darcy correct, in that there is a
touch of sarcasm in the above statement?)
Thanks,
Bryan
If these rumours are about Latino's, please save your money and go
somewhere else. I went once when I first moved to Guelph and it was
awful. Not authentic at all.
The guacamole was decent.
Mexican rice: too dry.
I'll probably wait for a month before trying it out again. Hopefully
they'd have worked out the kinks in the menu.
There's The Salsateria in Guelph. I haven't been since the re-
reopening, so I'm not sure what the new 3rd location is like.
I just walked by the old african restaurant (they moved to rockway)
and there was a sign in the window for a mexican restauarnt opening!
I think it is going to be called Mexican Deli....but don't quote me on
that
I had a beef burrito and the beef tried to be "pulled apart" and not
"ground" but it was watery and tasteless. The wrap fell apart within minutes
of picking it up, largely due to the liquid pouring out of the bottom.
Dreadful is the best word I could use.
The guacamole was actually surprisingly good - very chunky and flavourful.
For $12+, I won't be back for a while. Though they *might* work out the
kinks...

I have to agree. I had a puddle on my table by the time I was done
eating. I feel bad for the staff who have to clean up the messes all
those burritos leave behind.

I think this might be the best thing there; I haven't tried it
unfortunately. If I ever go back I'll have to try it.

I hope so. I like mexican food, but I can't easily hop down there for
dinner. $12 might be cheaper than a plane ticket, but is it cheap
enough?
Their spicy habanero salsa is disappointingly bland. I like to hope that
I was given the mildest stuff accidentally. (They were off by one, and
their salsa is modulo the spiciest).
The nachos I got weren't bad.
I've been a couple times now. I had the chicken flautas, and the
experience is close to yours. I'd recommend avoiding the chicken
dishes.
The beef burrito was pretty decent, though. Moist and tasty and large
enough to be worth the money. I stuck with the mild salsa, since I'm
a bit of a coward, but by the sounds of it, I don't have anything to
worry about.
Darcy.
In the interest of spreading truth and beauty, I made my way this
afternoon to Cambridge and El Rinconcito Mexicano. As I suspected,
this is the place which used to be in Hespeler and was widely renowned
for not being open when one got there. They moved to their present
location in Galt about 5 years ago, establishing themselves once again
as a grocery. Since then, they have gotten a restaurant license,
although they still have a small stock of groceries.
The chief cook/bottlewasher/waitress is Mexican, from Mexico City and
her husband is from El Salvador. The food is much more Mexican than
Salvadorian.
The food is good, well spiced and authentic as far as we could judge
from our 2 items. The salsas were home made, tasty and not
overpoweringly hot, a bit mild for my wife's taste. Unfortunately,
with one exception, pretty much only the usual suspects were on offer.
Tostada, burritos, gorditas, tacos, an enchilada plate (my wife's
choice), much more the sort of thing one would eat at the Mexican
equivalent of a county fair than what Mexican's are likely to eat at
home or in restaurants. The exception was pozole (my choice) which I
have never had before. For those not familiar with it, it is a hominy
based soup. Their version is extremely tasty and filling (order the
small) and I suspect very authentic. I can't imagine garnishing a
soup with radishes unless that was the way it's done at home.
All in all, a far better meal than the one we had at the now defunct
Mayan place and much cheaper. If you crave Mexican or just want to
find out if you like it, this is a good place to go if you are not
into driving to Detroit to eat. It is just down the street from the
Galt market hall and could well be combined with a trip to Saturday
market. It is quite small, 17 seats by my count, so there might be a
wait on a busy day.

Thanks for the report.
This is obviously the restaurant I referred to in my earlier post. My
friends thought it was new but, if it's been there ~5 years, it's not
all that new.
On the basis of your report, we will probably visit it some time next
week.
Ross.
Although the door says that the restaurant opens at 11 AM, when I arrived
at 11:15, the door was still locked. I waited for five minutes and then
called the phone number on the front door (519-578-7508). The guy who
answered said that he had forgotten to unlock the door, and came down a
few minutes later to let me in.
Here a summary of the menu:
Nachos supreme $6.99
Empanadas de pollo $7.99
Mexican fajitas $14.99
Quesadillas $5.99
Soft tacos $7.99
Zincronizadas $6.99
Tostadas $6.99
Chicken flautas $7.99
Mexican sandwich $8.99
Burritos $6.99
Enchiladas $9.49
Milaneza $10.99
Free home-made chips were served with a kind of creamy sauce. They were
not bad, but not salted enough for my taste. I ordered the beef burrito,
which was made with ground beef, but all the ingredients were fresh. There
were some nice flavors in the meat, but it was not terribly hot. They also
have a selection of sodas, including Mexican sodas.
Overall, it was above average for Kitchener-Waterloo, and I'll go again
sometime.
