is there a way to write this SQL more succinctly? (Dave Nicol's sparse row database)
I'm mapping property names to integers for storage efficiency (at high computational cost, giving the effort dubious worth) using a "tokens" table, which contains text token, interger primary key n, and integer count which gets incremented to maintain a usage statistic. (although my database might actually... more »

Old Linux Journals for sale cheap
Hi all, Year end activities are having me sort through old magazines I have stacked up. So far I have Linux Journals from 1996 - 2001 sorted out. I think I am missing 3 over all the range. Would like $15 a year if anyone is interested? Would rather sell by whole year than sell by single issue. I have more and am continuing to order them. Also have... more »

what cron job in Ubuntu would burn the hard disk and occupy a system for 10 minutes
Almost every time time I start my laptop, I notice the cpu indicator go high and the hard disk activity indicator stays on for quite a while. It is not caused by something I'm doing, in the output of top it appears some program is using "find" and it is driving the disk crazy. It is coming out of cron, or anacron, I'm pretty sure.... more »

ever administer NFS?
Dear Linux using buddies: I could use your help. I'm running a cluster with Rocks! Mostly, this is familiar. Rocks is a set of wrapper scripts and programs around CentOS. The only puzzle for me right now is NFS. I've not administered NFS before. I've gotten some advice on the rocks list that I can't parse. Rather than make a fool of myself to that group yet again, I'm making... more »

I saw the worm from hell yesterday on a windows system
A lady I help called because her Win system said it was infected and she needed to send in 49.95. It said she had a pernicious worm, but when I went and saw it, I was quite impressed by the intrusion. A thing called "Advanced Virus Remover" was flashing all kinds of popups, scary warnings. It even re-writes the global user background... more »

mailx
Is there any way to tell mailx to ignore an email server configured in sendmail.cf or in /etc/hosts and just do a DNS lookup? I don't see anything in any docs for a flag or anything to do that.
