Hi everyone,

I wanted to get some suggestions on training for VMware.  Is the classes from VMware worth it? Also what books have any of you used to learn?   Lastly would someone be willing to spend 4-5 hours with me to give a quick overview?  So I know a bit about it as I start to study the program, I am willing to compensate you for your time.

Thanks

Ish

I'd be willing to explain it to you like I do for my staff... But we are in Topeka.

Which product are you wanting to learn. I only know what I have played with vSphere (SAN) with ESX server and the workstation/fusion products. 4-5 hours sounds like a long overview. 10 minutes is enough to go over the products unless you meaning overview of live running systems.

If 10 minutes us enough to understand vmware then these certs sure do seem worthless.

He said quick overview 4-5 hours seems a long time to learn about vSphere. I know there are a lot of options/add-on to vSphere, but a high overview doesn't take that long. Reading over VMware site or even attending a VMUG meeting to ask about classes and training.

The class I took was pretty worthless. I had already been using VMware for a couple of months when I took it though.  I wrote an introduction to virtualization for the current edition of Linux in a Nutshell, but that was just before 4.0 came out.  That book is ripe for a new edition but the ideas for VMware are pretty much the same.   You might want to take a look at that.

If you have a bit of SysAdmin experience you might be able to come learn it on the job with me.  Then we would compensate you for your time. :-)

Sorry everyone I had my furlough day on Friday, so I am just getting caught up on my emails.  The reason I said 4-5 hours, was because I wanted learn about some of the configurations and command structure. So that I would be better equipped to play around with the program at home and develop some skills.

But I agree certs are meaningless unless you use the classes or time to actually play with the systems beyond what they teach so you build real comfort with the applications or system.  J
