Can anyone recommend a 802.11g card that is supported with WPA out of
the box on ubuntu 8.10?

I spent way too much time trying to get my lucent card to work.
wpa_supplicant doesn't come with hermes support and the link has been
broken due to corporate acquisitions.. Google did find an old copy
which I had to modify to actually compile. And after all that, it
seems the lucent card itself doesn't have the support I need?

I've got a Linksys card at home that I use and I've never had trouble
with it. I'll take a look at the model and will report back.

For me, on etch (yes, I know that debian etch !=  ubuntu 8.10, but I had similar headaches working on the same durn card),  I loaded the ACX111 ndis drivers (might have gotten away with the native non-wpa acx111 driver) and then I had to put this in /etc/network/interfaces:

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
    wpa-ssid Routah
    wpa-psk ThisAintMyRealPassphraseBrah

At which point it was able to authenticate to my dd-wrt box and get on-net.  It's happily sitting in the basement, humming away to itself now.

Did you try using ndiswrapper?  It was the only way for me to ever get my old wireless pcmcia card to work in linux.

Here’s a link to a guy who did it on his Dell with Ubuntu 8.10.  Might be a different card but the process is the same.
