Anybody want a great big server?

I have a big (and heavy) server in my basement that I'm not using.  I think it currently has some ancient version of Gentoo on it but given this audience I'm guessing that will not be kept.

The name of the game with this beast was redundancy...it's not too impressive by today's standards, but it should be able to keep ticking through quite a few invocations of Murphy's Law.

- Intel SC5000 chassis (may be able to find hardware for rackmount...currently set up for desk side) 
- Supermicro P3TDE6 motherboard 
- Dual Pentium 3 850Mhz CPUs (runs stable @ 1.13GHz)
- 512MB ECC Registered PC133 RAM (256MB stick x 2)
- U160 capable hot-swap drive bay (holds up to 5 1inch drives)

Given the age, the weight, and the probable distance to drive to pick it up, I'm saying it's free to a good home.  (Or a bad home...it's a computer; it won't care.)

I live in south Olathe, a couple miles from Garmin...that could be a convenient transfer point (especially if we host another KULUA meeting).

I have an old box that I am not sure how much longer it is going to survive,
this ha has better specs on it than the one I have does. I will even leave
the Gentoo on it :). Conveniently I work at Garmin so the pick up site works
for me any day.

I'm not sure if we're going to have another meeting at Garmin.  The facilities are nice, and Garmin has been a gracious host, but to be honest communication has been lacking.  :(

I believe I had 10 days to prepare for the last meeting, and this time around I was hoping for a month lead time (I was hoping for an October 2nd meeting date).  Unfortunately it took three weeks to get a response, and I was left with less than three weeks to prepare.  That's not enough time for me to find speakers and advertise.

I'm not sure when the next meeting will be, I've been really busy the last two weeks and I still need to line up a vendor and meeting space.

I can't speak for CCCKC, but I can put you in touch with Jestin, who is the new prexy of the org.  The space is smallish, but big enough to fit last time's KULUA turn-out of twentyish folks.  (Easy seating for about 25 at desks, spare chairs for maybe twenty more)

There's a projector on-site, better 'net than the guest wifi at Garmin, and it's in a very cool spot.  The only down-side would be that the claustrophobic wouldn't appreciate it.

I can get a room to hold around 30 people from JCCC for a LUG meeting,
but nobody I've talked to can go any larger for free. If anyone has
higher connections than I do on the academic side, we might be able to
reserve a larger room. Friday's are generally light on campus, so I
don't think it's impossible to find space.

Is the meeting married to catered lunch meals? It sounds like more
work for marginal returns to the group. Perhaps a "brownbag" approach
would suffice?

That's possible, though part of the appeal is that folks can get a free lunch while learning something new.  The fact that a vendor will be presenting on their products and services also helps as ultimately these meetings are about professional use of Linux and Unix.
