We tested 25 sealed one liter mineral water bottles in Kathmandu about 4 years ago because we had higher than usual diarrhea patients seen at the CIWEC Clinic. This was done in our research partner lab in Bangkok. 22 brands of water had no bacteria, of the 3 that had bacterial growth, they were not the ones that caused illness in humans. So we said to our patients that 1 liter bottles are safe to drink. We could not test the big jars of water but we feel that the established names among the big jars e.g. aqua hundred are OK.
Most cases of diarrhea are felt to be due to contaminated food rather than water. In Jamaica rates of diarrhea decreased by improving restaurant hygiene. Diarrhea doubles in the months of April, May and June and this is felt to be due to (not proven beyond doubt) flies in the environment
I guess my next question (for personal rather than business reasons, is what cunning solutions do people have for keeping the flies away!
Thanks, again, to CIWEC and everyone else who helped,
John
