Subject: Translation handling in KDE4
Hello everyone,

please have a look at the forwarded message and let us know what you think. As
KDE4 is the time for important changes we should consider to optimize the
things that weren't perfect in the KDE3 version.

bye,
Dirk

Situation in krusader for KDE3:
Function extract-messages in admin/cv.sh, which was trying to create .pot
files for each subdirectory,
where Makefile.am containing target messages. Those built krusader.pot for
krusader directory,
and tried to build also files krarc.pot and iso.pot, which failes (at least
for me) however.
If they had succeeded, there would be question, what would be the names of
translation of krarc.pot
so as not to conflict with the translation of krusader.pot
At runtime kio_krarc was looking for a translation in a file kio_krarc.mo,
which did not exist.
There was only one pot file for the krusader subfolder, messages in krArc and
tar were not in any .pot in cvs.

What can be done, so as it works:
 1) Approach in KDE:
There is a script extract-messages, which creates a .pot file for each
subfolder containing a script
Messages.sh. There is one .pot file for the application, and one for each
kio, and the same for the
translated .po files. Their base names are the same as the .mo files to be
installed (i.e templates
krusader.pot, kio_krarc.pot and kio_tar.pot and translations for each
language krusader.po, kio_krarc.po
and kio_tar.po). Those are stored in a directory (l10n or po) with one
subdirectory for templates, and
   subdirectories one for each language.
So the structure of po directory would be:
   +templates/
    -krusader.pot
    -kio_krarc.pot
    -kio_tar.pot
   +de/
    -krusader.po
    -kio_krarc.po
    -kio_tar.po
   +es/
    -krusader.po
    -kio_krarc.po
    -kio_tar.po
    ...
KDE already has separate message catalogs for kio slaves - kio_lan.mo,
kio_nfs.mo, kio_pop3.mo, etc.
 2) Approach recommended in:

http://techbase.kde.org/index.php?title=Development/Tutorials/Localiz...
One .pot file (krusader.pot) will include also the messages from kio_tar
and kio_krarc. That would
require to change the code of those kios so that they look for krusader.mo
instead of kio_krarc.mo.
The po directory structure of krusader could be the same as it is now (i.e.
krusader.pot, de.po, es.po, ...
    in po/ directory).
de.po compiled as de.gmo and installed as krusader.mo.

Second important thing is:
KDE4 now uses gettext format of plurals and context, so that the .po files
have to be converted.
There is a buggy script in KDE for the conversion, and I made the
conversion using it
(and my script, which fixed some issues), so that we can do the conversion
for the translators, but they
will have to check the result then.

Comments are welcome
