Same here. Seems the forum is a high risk top security area. Password needs to be more secure than in my banking account. Sorry, I won't join a forum that doesn't accept my standard password for forums, which is 8 characters long and contains letters and non-letters (no numbers, sorry). I'm sure though, that this security measures can be lowered...

Did I write I use my banking password for forums? I don't think so. I wrote that krpano forum actually enforces a higher security password than my banking account. Hence I can't re-use my banking password, sorry ;-)

Ah, that's why you post passwords on a public mailing list... :-)
> Any software developer who understands the basics can tell you, so you > don't have to take my word for it.
I'm a software developer myself and I didn't say I use the same password. I use a scheme that helps me remembering the passwords. Anyway, I don't understand that a public forum needs such a high protection.
Actually enforcing such high security on something profane like a forum produces security risks more than it prevents. The more complicated a password needs to be the higher the risk that it is reused. And usually forums don't use https, so it is easy to fake a login page...
Furthermore high security passwords don't help anything against spammers, which is the highest danger for a forum.

I also would welcome a reduced level of security at that forum. I find it hard enough to use web forums without being asked to use such deep security measures. I don't know of any system that is quite this strict, including the iTunes/App Store or the Apple Developer Account system.
I haven't looked at the KRPano forum for a *very* long time, almost entirely because the password system is annoyingly obstructive. I now realise this is causing me to drift away from using KRPano itself as much as I would otherwise, which is a shame.

easier access does not have to go hand in hand with reduced security. Implement OpenID login [0]
> I find it hard enough to use web forums
me too, so I don't use them. They creep up as top results on Google search and most often what I read (and there is no need to enter a password to read) raises more questions than answers.
But they are improving, with reputation ranking of posts like StackOverflow [1]
What bothers me most about web forums in general is the formatting. Color combinations and font designs affect reading speeding. I find icons, avatars and graphical smileys a distraction from my objective to read and understand the information as fast as possible.
I am an adept of fast-reading. Timing myself, I confirmed what extensive cognitive research in the subject has been demonstrating for years:
1. *constant* reading conditions improve reading speed - this goes against the web forums having each their own look and feel
2. the choice of color combination affects reading speed, and one of the best ones is black on white - this goes against web forums choosing colors based on their aesthetic perceptions; and against letting writers control formatting
3. the choice of font affects reading speed. Fixed-width improves up to 30% reading speed vs. variable-width, ceteris paribus. Serif fonts are faster- readable than equivalent non-serif fonts. Courier is actually one of the most readable fonts out there. - this goes against web forums choosing fonts based on their aesthetic perceptions; and against letting writers control formatting beyond basic underlining / bold.
The beauty of newsgroups is that I read them in a local client where I don't worry about passwords and I can set the choice of font and color constant across different groups and adapted to my specific needs (fast-reading). People with impaired vision can set it for themselves, changing contrast, size, etc.).
> I haven't looked at the KRPano forum for a *very* long time
I don't even recall when I last looked at the KRPano forum. Have I missed something? too bad for me.
I find the documentation [2] good enough for my KRPano related needs.
> What bothers me most about web forums in general is the formatting. Color > combinations and font designs affect reading speeding. I find icons, avatars > and graphical smileys a distraction from my objective to read and understand > the information as fast as possible.
I absolutely agree. I want to have my own environment for reading and I configure my mailreader such that I can do that effectively: threaded view, no distraction by odd graphics, marking threads read by one keystroke, threads with own postings marked etc.
It makes me wonder that no one has developed a forum yet that also serves as a mailing list or is accessible by NNTP. But stop: Netbeans has it. From http://netbeans.org/community/lists/ : "The forums and news groups are synchronized with the mailing lists. This means a comment posted on a forum will appear on the corresponding mailing list, and vice versa." Bingo, but why is it so rarely used?
I tought I was the only stupid guy in the world who could not feel "at home" trying to read the forum
I love KRP but I've been using it less, just after the damm forum was created, and people moved all the infos to there :-( It was so good to read it here !
And as Yuval noted ... anyone can read it .... That's very strange; You don;t need a COMPLICATED, very "WAR" like password to read it !!!!
But for the bad guys, like me that want to just make somes questions, you gotta be a Dr. to be able to create a password that I never forget, otherwise it takes me almost 30 minutes to get in ... like it did last saturday :-(

Why don't you use such great tool as Last Password that stores all
login/pass and fill them for you :) I'm surprised to see all that
noise for just some login problem on a forum !

The login problem is only a very small part of the big problem, which is called "web forum". The biggest part is that it forces a reading environment on me that is inconvenient and ineffective to use. I participate in about two dozen mailing lists, some of them with high traffic.
My mail reader shows me at one glance which list has new mailings and how much and I can read them all and eventually reply in an environment that I have adjusted exactly to my needs. Now do the same with forums: Only to visit all of them would take more time than browsing through all the messages in my different mailing list folders each day.
I hope that one day a solution like the netbeans one (mentioned earlier in this thread) would be the normal case instead of the exception...

I won't ask whether I can too... ;-)
But seriously, it is the learning and understanding that open conversations promote that is the magic.
Forums work for some people, but they really don't for others. I'm in the latter category - so I rarely see what's happening in the KRPano world. (What's the latest version BTW?)
I too wish Netbeans or something similar could be used. I would take part on a regular basis.

Good question. Many answers. Off-topic if this is meant to be a KRpano list, but hey, nobody is really using this for KRpano anymore, so I may as well share this information with you here, publicly, rather than in a private mail.
Historically: Web based forums were born as a poor man *alternative* to mailing lists. Cheap hosting services offered apache+php+mysql. Not ML. So few contributors to web based forums had an interest in or were aware of the need to support mailing lists.
Historically 2: Web based forums were adopted by the general public. Lazyness did the rest. Lazyness killed the netiquette. People no longer learn it. People no longer understand why things were done a certain way. They just do it the "easy" way. Which ends up being easier for them, but not for everybody else (e.g.: it is easy to top post and not to quote properly, but subsequent readers will have a hard time understanding the thread without wasting a huge amount of time). Anyway, this is a digression / rant, so back on topic.
Technically: there are many forum implementations and many mailing list implementations. Can't patch them all.
I did a little bit of analysis.
Netbeans' forum is powered by phpbb [0] which resides in [1] . It's mailing list is sympa [2] and it resides in [3].
Both are GPL2 licensed projects, so modifications, unless kept and operated in-house, should be made available under the terms of the GPL.
I did not find anything more from Netbeans, but I found a tool that might be using [4]. But of course they could be using their own proprietary sauce in full compliance of the GPL since they don't distribute it.
Problem with this tool is that it is obviously undeveloped. Works only with phpbb version 2, not with version 3 nor with all other incarnations of web based forums.
As time goes by phpbb version 2 is likely to become deprecated and expose unplugged security holes.
If I was maintaining a web forum or a mailing list, I would not want to pick up an unmaintained piece of software, especially for such a critically vulnerable function as messaging.
Actually, if I was deciding about having or not such a many-to-many communication tool, I would probably recommend GoogleGroups or YahooGroups as they have already all the needed functionality, and they are free. But obviously the owner of KRpano has come to a different conclusion, since he deems it worth it to spend his resources on a self-hosted web forum.
So this discussion is moot for every practical purpose, at least here. I have an interest for similar functionality in a different context and being able to ssave resources by re-using what already exists as open source would save me a lot of time and money.
