Hi there,
I am a new member and have been attending Tuesday nights Crafthall at Stormhold since last month. I live in the outer east and I was wondering if you could help me out with some answers to my questions? Where would I go to learn some medieval music? I wish to learn medieval drumming. Any ideas to point me in the right direction?
Regards,

The only source for period drummnig that I am aware of is Arbeau's
Orchesography, and from memory that is mainly to do with military
drumming. I would be surprised if there is actually a treatise on
drumming out there, as it's not the sort of musical detail people were
likely to go into. For dancing there are a lot of rhythm's you would
be expected to know, but mostly it's a case of playing it by feel.

Ok that sounds good. Maybe I should go to a medieval dancing event to get the feel for the drum rhythms etc.

You'd be most welcome at St mons dance practise. We don't have an
experienced drummer to teach you about drumming, but we would be happy
to show you how it fits to the dances, introduce you to a copy of
Arbeau, and let you experiment by playing for us. We've found with our
wind musicians that those who know a few dances learn how to fit the
rythyms to the music quicker than those who don't.

You may also wish to talk to Rodrigo of stormhold, who has run
beginner classes on drumming in the past.

St mons dance practise is held almost every friday at monash
university from 6-8pm. We're taking a break for the next 2 weeks due
to Christmas and new year. You can check if the practise will run on
the calendar:

But we mostly only stop for christmas, easter and when there is
annother sca event on in melbourne.
Over the summer months we are practising on the science lawn:

(also called the boob lawn for reasons which should be evident in the
aeirial photo - we dance between the mound and the circle)

I hope to meet you there.

Contact me by email for more details, or if you have trouble finding
us (phone on the day: 0431-928-464).

Thank you very much Tiffany for your help. I will definitely pop in for a look at your dance practice sometime in mid January.
