we're doing steady, almost daily, TLUD burns to make biochar at four oaks community farm.
yesterday was burn #8 -- our best yet: fast start, no smoke, hot burn, clean quick finish.
we are refining our equipment and understanding of this controlled burn technique.

burn #6 on sunday was ugly: after a clean start, lots of smoke.
the gas flare in the chimney choked for air and went out.
a thick fog of smoke billowed out of the chimney.
attempts to ignite these gases failed repeatedly.
eventually we disassembled the chimney and lit the gases in the barrel.
one length of stovepipe was restored, but we lost the gas flame again.

but serendipity has a surprise for us.
brad tipped the stpvepipe slightly to suck more air in at its bottom.

suddenly, our apparatus was transformed into a flashy fireball cannon.
quite an unexpected fire & light show!
enjoy my 1.5 minute fireworks video:

and we ended up with a decent yield of biochar.
