Subject: Computer Cables
I am looking for a source of various computer cables that are
reasonably priced. Suggestions where you have had good luck would be
appreciated!

Specifically what I need is a USB 3.0 A to AB cable for a hard drive.

Thank you,
Ben

Our garages, probably. Correct me anyone if I'm wrong, but a 10 year old
USB cable shouldn't be any different from a new one today in terms of
speed, right? There's no Cat5e vs Cat3 equivalent in the USB world, right?

USB 3.0 standard has a different connector set from USB 2.0, there are
extra pins in the connector (but port is backwards compatible).

Monoprice.com you won't find good cables cheaper. I'm going to be making an
order soon if you want to split shipping. Shipping is usually more than the
order @$5-10

Oh my are those awesomely inexpensive cables! Unfortunately it appears
that they do not carry the type I need. They have A->A, A->B but not
A->AB

Staples has them in stock for $35. Best Buy doesn't carry them. Office
Depot has them online only (no store delivery) with the total being
$20.

Someone should crunch it out and invent a universal plug and a universal
socket.

The universal plug could be named O and the universal socket would have to
be AB.

If you're confused, ask a nurse.

Hey now, let's keep this G-rated... :-)

Don't forget the mini-B. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Types-usb_th1.svg

Ben, I too have never heard of AB. Any chance the thing you're looking at
is a proprietary plug/socket for the hardware you're using?

I spent a long time looking for the "special HDMI" connector I needed for
my Dell laptop... only to discover it was actually DisplayPort.

Whaddayaknow! I've never heard of such. Maybe had one of those in a camera
cable one time way back? Knox Makers: every morning I wake up and wonder
what new wonder I'll learn from this mailing list.

Derek, I hadn't realized we lost the mini-B with the 2.0 --> 3.0 evolution.
Moment of silence.... and I'm over it.

Short story: It is a USB 3.0 Micro-B

Look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus#Physical_appearance

On the left you will see two connectors label "Micro-A" and "Micro-B".
Those make up the joined connector, so I can see why the cable I did
find was labeled as A ->AB. On the right you will see what the
connecter looks like. That is labeled "Micro-B USB 3.0"

While most of us probably make our own Ethernet cables, I do recommend to
friends to go to Home Depot or Lowes rather than BB or Staples.  Most
people also don't need Cat 6 to go from their cable modem to their
router.....
