I just installed the latest version of GE and I cannot open kml files
when I click on them in a webpage..

These guys are experiencing the same but with kmz:

Is there a solution for this?

What browser are you using?

I've seen similar symptons with Internet Explorer when the Temporally
Internet Files folder gets full/corrupted. The simple fix was to just
clear the folder (using the button in Internet Options)

Thanks Barry for coming back.

I am experiencing this in the latest firefox as well, although the
error message is slightly different.

In FF it is saying "somefile.kml cannot be opened, because an unknown
error occurred.

Please try saving the file, and open it from there" (rough translation
from my language)

Now when I save the kml feed onto my desktop I can usually open the
kml file, but sometimes I just see a blink and nothing happens.

I tried restarting the comp, and reinstalling Google Earth as well.
With previous versions, everything was cool.

Barry, and one more thing.

I tried clearing IE 6's cache but no luck.

When I Save the file and double click on it I get yet again a
different error message:saying "parameter error". I tried it with kml
files from panoramio and such and get the same.

Yet, when I drap and drop the saved kml file, then it loads fine into
GE...

Hi giorgio,

Just to confirm, you downloaded the latest version of Google Earth?
4.2? Can you post a link to a particular file you're having trouble
with? That will help with testing.

Szia ManoM :)

Thanks for coming back.

Yes, I just installed the latest version a couple of hours ago. Here
are the specs:

Google Earth
4.2.0181.2634 (beta)
Build Date
Aug 21 2007
Build Time
16:41:33
Renderer
OpenGL
Operating System
Microsoft Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
Video Driver
NVIDIA Corporation (00006.00014.00010.09371)
Max Texture Size
4096x4096
Server
kh.google.com

Not sure if this would be helpful, but for example here is one

http://www.panoramio.com/kml/

Basically, I am having a problem with all kml files it seems.

When I try to open this link in the browser, I am prompted for the
Download or Open it in Google Earth dialog. When I ok Google Earth, I
Get the error "...popular.kml cannot be opened because of an unknown
error." in Firefox.

Szia giorgio!,

> Thanks for coming back.

I haven't gone anywhere! The KML Gurus, though, have been answering a
lot of questions really well, so I have just been monitoring.

This is an interesting error message you're getting. I can't replicate
it. So, here's two things to try:
1) is your video driver up to date?
2) how much video memory do you have?

Szia ManoM and Barry :)

I think I have the answer...
Just found this message:
http://groups.google.com/group/earth-pro/browse_thread/thread/20c6c40dc3bace53

Last night I installed the latest GE on another one of my comps with
English browsers, so I could get the exact English error message and
found this post.

Will try this tonight :)

Cheers,
Gyuri

Yipee, found the solution.

It was here:
http://groups.google.com/group/Is-Something-Broken/browse_thread/thread/87b41a1ef19b6251/993049e240f34d99?lnk=gst&q=&rnum=5

"Looking at the key for .kmz in the registry - once again a value
called "Application" is present and set to "googleearth.exe". Delete
this and it all works again. "

:)

I posted a similar complaint but can't find that thread. Around when
I upgraded to 4.2 my browser lost most of its ability to click once to
feed files to Google Earth. I don't know how much might be in Firefox
and whether Google tinkered with its KML/KMZ associations in their
servers at the same time. I do know it are broken.

Hi SEWilco,

Gyuri's link is currently working. I've shortened it here:
http://gesolution.notlong.com

But primarily, as he said, "Looking at the key for .kmz in the

registry - once again a value
called "Application" is present and set to "googleearth.exe". Delete
this and it all works again."

We didn't do anything on our end to change the file extensions. File
extension settings are handled in the computer.
