One of the problems I've always had with converting SHP to KML is there was no easy way to query the polygons directly from the map as is possible in a typical GIS program.

Well tonight I found a free program that will create a point SHP file from a polygon SHP file. It's called GeoDa . With the point SHP file you can now query the polygon directly from the map view.

So with GeoDa, Shape2Earth and MapWindows GIS It's pretty easy to create a decent KML file from SHP files.

Tonight I did the Principal Aquifers of the US. It's a six meg KMZ so I won't post it here, but if you want to try it you can find it at the link below my name.

Forkboy2,

It is possible to querry (Get the info balloon to pop up) from a polygon. Hold down <Ctrl> and left-click on the polygon. Also, thanks for the information on the new tool.

I have most of the weather data that is available for GE, but I really need to be able to pull the storm track and error cone data. The file formats are
.shx
.shp
.dbf

I need to convert to .kml or .kmz or other GE file.

I am waiting on the boss to let me spend $200 for GE Pro, but I need a fix until then.

I have searched but can not find any answers without having to drop some bucks.

Any help would be appreciated.

Now you tell me

Thanks for the tip. Actually it is <Ctrl> then double left click to bring up the pop up. That is much better way of doing it.

Shape2Earth will convert SHP files to KML for free. That's what I used to create the aquifer map. With the CTRL Double-Click trick, that's really all you should need.
