I am having trouble with one of my KMZ files.
(track of a sea turtle swimming 1/2 way between new zealand and south
america now)

http://sirtrack.com/downloads/tarly_17nov09.kmz

The red track line shows up on my PC but several users have reported
that it does not show up for them.

Can anyone help by opening and seeing if the red track line is there?
and if not, I would love ideas on why it is sometimes there and
sometimes not.

Cheers,

Andy

anyone here? even if nobody knows the answer, it would be nice to
know if the red track shows up for anyone besides me...

I also cannot see the red line.

But if I change the altitude to relative to ground level 0m (which
should be the same) it all pops out as you presumably intend.

Now that does not make sense at all.

I tried -10m and +5m rel to grouund and all are OK but as soon as I go
to absolute it fails.

I am using PowerPC iMac running under OSX 10.4.11 and version
5.1.3533.1731 of GE which is a month or so old.

So try the rel to ground zero and see if your colleagues can see it.

PS I have dived just a short way from position 1 - Poor Knights -
wonderful!!

The complex terrain is the one to blame. On the main google layers,
uncheck "Terrain" layer.

Bob,

I will look at the altitude issue. this track specifically is a
turtle, so it is definitely at sea level.
How do you change the alt to relative to ground level in google earth?

Met_apps,

interesting, if I turn on terrain, both the track line and all the
placemarks are hidden.

When terrain is off, they both appear. So, I don't think that is
quite what I am seeing.

What I am talking about is that for some users, the yellow dots
(placemarks) show, but the red track line does not.

thoughts?

Ding,
Here's the link to altitude mode http://code.google.com/apis/kml/documentation/kmlreference.html#altitudemode
I added <altitudeMode>relativeToGround</altitudeMode> to the line and
it will show at all elevation axaggeration.
I think this should solve your original issue of not having the track
shown on different computers (most likely due to their settings).
I don't see the option to attach the file so you need to follow the
steps below to replicate what I did.

1. Export a copy of your old track line to a new file.
2. Open the new file in text editor and add line
"<altitudeMode>relativeToGround</altitudeMode>" after "<tessellate>1</
tessellate>"
3. Change the altitude for the first 3 points to "1000" or some other
value larger than zero (so that we can differentiate the old from the
new).
4. Change color for this trackline to something other than red.
Again, this will help you differentiate the old vs new.
5. Save the file and load it into GE. Also make sure the original
track line (red) is activated as well.
6. Make sure Terrain layer is checked.
7. Go to "Tools > Options..." and change "Elevation Exaggeration" to ".
9" and "1.0" and hit apply, respectively.
You should notice the old trackline will dissappear at value of "1.0"
Note: If the red track does not dissappear at 1.0, try incrementing it
at "0.1" ...
Let me know what you find.

I am intrigued that you mention trying Elevation Exaggeration at 0.9
and 1.0

In theory these two values should only affect what you see.

Yet I believe there is a small bug in GE for that situation when
Terrain is turned on.

i have posted about it in a number of places but had no response.

Do you have specific experience with this aspect?

For further information see my posts via my profile.

Or search on elevation exaggeration through both kml and Google
Support groups.

I would be keen to hear of anything you have in this area.
