Loading myplaces problem

Hi there - first the two popup messages [dated 2006 !] dont help
PROBLEM = LOADING NOW ALWAYS TAKES 5mins TO COMPLETE
Earth Ranger Adam on Google Earth Help Group suggested I pose this
question - i tried all the suggestions on their Group

Downloaded new copy of GE Version 4.2.205.5730
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service
Pack 2
Graphics Controller = Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV - UPDATE CHECKED OK
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

Start GE in default mode - Initialisation starts - 'Loading myplaces'
banner appears
LOADING TAKES 5mins TO COMPLETE - after the delay GE operates as
normal ie homes to centre USA - eye at 11001km - My Places empty -
Temporary Places empty

Tried starting GE in both OpenGL and DirectX modes - same result
tried SYS RESTORE [back 6 weeks] and cut all anti-virus, spyware and
other defence applications - STILL 5mins LOAD

G EARTH initially ran normally for many months - but slow operation
started after installing extensive PATHS data - all cleared from My
Places and Temporary Places
all saved "My Places" data was copied to removable HD and cleared from
Local Disk [C]: before the tests on the 5min loading delay.
also searched Local Disk (C:) for 'dbCache' - no results

Could you post the My Places file to the Files section of this group
so we can take a look at it?

not sure what 'My Places' file you refer to
all 'My Places' data was removed from GE before tests

all saved "My Places" data was copied to removable HD and cleared from
Local Disk [C]: before the tests

Hi,

There should be a file at this path:
C:\Documents and Settings\[yourwindowsusername]\Application Data\Google
\GoogleEarth\myplaces.kml

That's your My Places file. Can you upload that?

Or, better yet, simply rename it, something like myplaces.old.kml,
while Google Earth is not open, and then open Google Earth. It should
create a clean myplaces.kml file.

hello again
My method has been to save sets of PLACEMARKS and PATHS as individual
KMZ files
So I would not expect to find a 'My Places' file on my HD

But I did search of Local Disk (C:) for 'myplaces'
only result = 'default_myplaces' in C:\Program Files\Google\Google
Earth
click on this KMZ file opens GE - took 4mins to load default
'Sightseeing' places
???

Hi glanerch,

If you open up Windows Explorer (or double click on My Computer), then
go up to Tools->Folder Options->View and make sure show hidden files
and folders is selected. Then navigate to the path I suggested, it
doesn't always show up in search, and see if you can find a
myplaces.kml. The way Earth works is that when you load a file, it
saves a copy into My Places.

did full search for 'myplaces' files to find 5 files [some 10MB] in
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Google
\GoogleEarth
plus 5 hidden files in
C:\Documents and Settings\TF\Application Data\Google\GoogleEarth
deleted all except 'myplaces.backup-7-10-2006'
did rename to "myplaces.kml"

click on new 'myplaces' file - BINGO !!

Hi terry,

Certainly it could work for other folks. Not many that I know of have
myplaces problems, but certainly this is a strategy that works for
some.
