Hi,

I cant seem to find an answer to this and would be grateful if
anyone knows how I can make a kml only viewable the one time, and to
make a setting so users cannot save it in tempory places or places in
Google Earth? Its for a company who have intranet and want to keep the
info within the company, i.e. not allow staff to send it to mates or
anything. They have premier api key and everything. Any ideas would be
very pleased.

many thanks,

tom

I don't think it's possible to prevent people from saving the file.
Once they're downloaded and opened it in Google Earth, people have
free range to save it, edit it, etc. Seems that you may have some
trust issues at your company...

ha ha - yeah I think they do, i mean your staff are'nt normally
allowed to share info with there mates so I dont know why they think
this now. Anyway thanks for your reply, i guess it makes sense, as kml
is downloaded. I guess a way round it would be to only accept
downloading of info(images) from certain ip's.

Anyway many thanks for your reply.

best wishes,

tom

There are things you can do. Check out following.

They load the KML data via a network link and ASPX. So if the user
tries to save the file, all they get is a link to the data on the
remote server. If that server was blocked to outside traffic by
firewall, there shouldn't be any way to access from off site. Someone
that was really smart about KML and networking might still figure out
how to take the data with them, but the average joe probably would
not.

Matt,

There is no way to protected or hide kml like that, it is just a
network link that points to a cgi script.
You would be better served including some kind of branding/copyright/
disclaimer with the kml file.

Tom,
Fraser's idea is the right way to go.
You can make the disclaimer an auto-pop up window (with "DO NOT
DISTRIBUTE" clearly covering the screen) once KML is opened.
By the way, KML is meant to be flexible, easy-to-use, and it's open
source.
If you really want to protect the file, you may want to use ESRI
products :) - not that I like ESRI software.
