At 0715 this morning, I stopped alongside the meadow on Dead Indian Memorial Rd that is just west of FS Road 37; that is, the meadow that provides the “Mt. Fuji” view of Mt. McLoughlin. As soon as I stepped out of my car, I was greeted by the sound of winnowing Wilson’s Snipe. Hard to guess how many birds were present, but I’d estimate 20+. The sounds came from all directions, and both sides of the road. To complete the show, a pair of Sandhill Cranes called from the north side of the meadow while two snipe perched on fence posts.

I had driven to the site in hopes the snipe would be present, because I have experienced this phenomenon 4-5 times in past years, usually around IMBD. I was not disappointed today.

I then drove FS Road 3661, the road that goes north from Hwy 140 toward Four Mile Lake. At a distance of 3.9 miles from Hwy 140, I saw some likely looking habitat, got out of the car, and listened. In approx 5 minutes I heard what I suspected was a Black-backed Woodpecker knocking. I followed the sound and was rewarded with up-close views of a female Black-backed. The male continued to tap in the distance. In addition, I saw a pair of Red-breasted Sapsuckers that were calling and tapping.

BTW, the road is clear and relatively smooth, but impassable due to snow just beyond the 5 mile point.

Cheers,

Dick
