Fellow Runners,

On account of the extreme humidity that we experienced last Thursday we didn’t have much in the way of post-run comments except to confirm that conditions were ‘bloody humid’ (Ruud et al). To offset the ‘heated’ memories of last week we shall, instead, turn our attention to the cooler climes of England where fellow KR, Gareth, took part in the London Marathon. Established in 1981, the London Marathon is one of the world’s premier marathons, attracting over thirty-thousand participants each year.* This year there was added appeal, marking an important prelude to the London 2012 Olympics. Gareth continues:

. . . this is an amazing event. I can't recommend it highly enough. Brilliantly organised, a lovely course and the atmosphere is phenomenal—people line the entire route (I'm not exaggerating) and cheer the whole way. (Makes our C2S look like small beer, even though it has twice as many runners.) The weather was perfect:  sunny, 13 degrees with a light breeze . . . As for me, alas, it wasn't a great day. Was fine for the first half (about on target from last year), but the lack of preparation caught up with me as I learned a new word: ‘wall’. Ouch! Eventually cracked after 22 miles and walked half of the last 4. Finished in 3:25, which was respectable but not one for the Hall of Fame. I repeated my mantra from Canberra last year: ‘I will never do this again’. We'll see :-)

We appreciate such reports—so keep them coming in! Don’t forget that, this Sunday, we have the KRs’ Inaugural Kirribilli to Manly Run (further details below).** OK, we’ll see you very shortly.

Best wishes,

Dave

* See <www.virginlondonmarathon.com>.  Africa dominated this year’s event with Kenya’s Wilson Kipsang and Mary Keitany taking out the men’s and women’s events. Keitany became the third fastest woman in marathon history, clocking 2 hr 18 min 37 sec; Kipsand, who was way ahead of the field, clocked 2 hr 4 min 44 sec. See S. Hart, ‘London Marathon 2012: Kenyan double as Wilson Kipsand and Mary Keitany coast to victories’, Telegraph, 22 April 2012, n.p. (If someone managed to record this event please let me know so we can play it at HQ next week.)

** KRs’ Inaugural Kirribilli to Manly. This Sunday, 10 am.  Start usual meeting spot; finish in Manly followed by lunch. Ferry back. If interested get in touch with Adam or myself.

KR Ski trip 19-24/26 August (Gareth)

After the success of last year's inaugural ski trip, we're planning a larger scale effort for 2012, and are hoping to get a big group together to go to Thredbo. All levels of skier and boarder are welcome, from total beginners to experts. The tentative plan at this stage is to have a week's rest following the City2Surf (Sun Aug 12) then go for 4-6 days skiing from Sun 19th - Fri 24th / Sun 26th. Depending on numbers we'll rent one or more lodges / apartments to make the apres-ski easier. Indicative costs would be around $700-1000 per head for the accommodation, and about $100-120/day for ski pass / lessons / equipment hire, depending on what you need. We can pool cars and cook together, so transport and meals should be cheap. The only likely blow-out will be the wine bill :)If you're (even vaguely) interested please let me know (gda...@sxvp.com) so I can put you on the 'maybe' list. I'll firm up numbers over the next month or so and book early to get a good place.  If you want to find out more or discuss options just catch me on a Thursday night . Hope to see you there. Gareth
